Pet peeves: The return (Part 2)

There is a delicate balance between IC and OOC. A tenuous harmony so often broken and shattered.

So long as the players remember that RP isn’t about winning and know when to walk away, it can work out quite well.

Life peeve:
I could hear dripping in the house, other half couldn’t.
He said its just the heavy rain. My elf ears knew better. After trying to pin point the sound, I managed to find it… Our boiler is leaking.

Someone copied her full statement onto Reddit, for anyone interested.

It just really clonks my bonkers that people who say a silly on Twitter seem to end up more ferociously despised than actual war criminals. I can only hope one day Burma’s military dictator posts some off colour Steven Universe fanart to the bird app; then maybe he’ll face a consequence for something.

The trouble is that the people orchestrating massive harm are unaccountable and don’t care.

It’s a messy situation where on the one hand you have people who have to deal with the sting of someone who purports to be an ally wading poorly into a discussion that isn’t for them, or making jokes at their expense, and on the other you have someone who has to be intensely careful of what they post because they have a ‘platform’.

A bit painful to see her bring up Isabel Fall and Neon Yang when the context is of her getting a ton of criticism for stepping way out of her lane though

That’s the friendliest image I’ve seen associated with Burma for quite some time; thank you.

Burn Twitter down. To the ground. The hate mobs are inherent in the system and the very way the platform is designed.

A L G O R I T H M.

Honestly though and I’ll end my rant here with what was supposed to be a short micdrop but turned into an essay - Twitter honestly reminds me of like, some kind of scheming royal court or the inner circle of a dictatorship. For every one person genuinely trying to serve the ruler/the ruled, there’s three who just want to stick the knife in someone’s back; perhaps for their own personal gain, or maybe just for the sadistic glee of it.

And the thing is, even if there’s 100,000 people who are giving what you might call ‘valid criticism’ (let’s be honest though, on the internet, even valid criticism is usually written in the cruellest way possible) - the human brain just isn’t designed to process such a mass of people coming at you like that. As far as your noggin is concerned, you’re a caveperson getting violently ostracised from the tribe; and no matter who you are, what you did, or what your politics are, that sort of thing is going to break your soul.

Add to that the 300,000 people who are literally just there to relish in your demise - it’s no wonder people break down the way they do after these Twitter incidents.

And that’s why I can’t stand Twitter; because it just seems to be a hotbed of people waiting for you to make a slip up so they can flaunt their own woke credentials by ripping you a new backside - but only if you’re also on Twitter with them. I know I bring it up a lot; but if all these online activists who loudly proclaim how woke & anti oppression they are put as much time and effort into say, organising donations to the Red Cross or bombarding the Twitter accounts of authoritarian governments the world over as they did taking down E-celebs for silly takes on movies - they could make real, positive change in the world.

But they dont - and, being cynical, I dont think they’d ever want to. Because owning the Ethiopian government or the Taliban with mass donations to famine relief or women’s education charities just isn’t as HIP or as SEXY as really sticking it to some (preferably white) e-celeb for a problematic take. Bare in mind; I’m not saying I’m any better here - I give a tenner to the Red Cross every month out of my wages, that’s the extent of my activism. But by god; imagine if these Twitter people who so proudly monitor the bird app for the slightest youtube personality infraction did the same?

It’s just a cess pit of bullies looking for a viral hit; and god forbid one day it’s -you- who puts a foot out of line - because no matter how much you agree with the criticism, 100,000 people calling you out on it will absolutely kill you.

Nothing but pure facts & logic here.

Indeed! I add that oftentimes RPers that want to win do so because of a sort of faction pride rather than just wanting to win for the sake of winning: it’s impossible that a night elf druid would lose to a human warrior, it’s impossible for a human warlock to cast a dark spell in ashenvale without being tracked down by seven archdruids, or for a paladin to be even wounded by a death knight. And so on.

A lot of people are very attached to their fictional fantasy race, and the thought of seeing them fail/lose at something causes them real pain, which quickly turns into drama!

Aw thanks!

I have more!

While reading up on Lindsay Ellis and wondering what else did she do to warrant her exit (apparently nothing, just the same from last year), I did read some interesting comments.

She has stepped a bit out of her lane and received valid critiques for it - addressed in the Mask Off video -, the targetted harassment might not even all come from leftists themselves, and when it is, it’s because she’s reachable.

You’re not going to get any right-wing neocon cancelled on Twitter because they get off on being told they’re bigoted. A lot of the ‘left eating left’ meme is also caused by the same right-wing troll accounts or bots, often seen from 4chan etcetera.

People often also refer to left-leaning people as the terminally online Twitter people, at least in my understanding of the usual contexts, but I guess it’s really just all people on Twitter, also including the right-wingers (and the troll accounts). Real critique can’t even be made through Twitter, the word limit doesn’t allow for that and going through threads is such a hassle. Video responses are so much better as critiques.

As far as I know, it wasn’t really stepping way out of her lane, though? Most of the Raya criticism was pretty… absurd.

It’s a shame, I did like her videos, at least those I’ve seen. At least there’s still Contrapoints, whenever she posts in half a year’s time.

So I’ve looked up what exactly Lindsay said about Raya and the Last Dragon that ignited the Twitter hate mob, and…

Really? Really? Over this? Talk about making a mountain out of a molehill.

Exactly. Twitter doesn’t allow thoughtful, constructive debate by design.

I’ve only watched the earliest ones, back when she was the Nostalgia Chick on Channel Awesome. I remember them being insightful and funny. No idea about later ones, though.

I’m guessing Stonetower probably referred to Lindsay’s earlier, probably (as I can’t exactly remember what she said that was problematic) worse things than the Raya stuff, but it’s still digging through internet history.

While not justifying what’s been said, I’m willing to bet nearly everyone did some really bad takes in the 2014-2017 era when being anti-SJW was cool and hip.
