Pet peeves: The return (Part 2)

By the dark gods, they’re NFTs…

So damn true and part of the general alienation and dehumanising of our fellow players. We’re not npcs in your hero’s journey. Especially not if there’s a plot involved.

NFT stands for Nightelf Flaming Tuckus

I rarely plug Youtubers, but this was actually an interesting look back in time for WoW… if you have time to kill.

People get mad about ubisoft reinventing the wheels with their “NFTs”

Team Fortress had unusual hats/items for far longer than that which are the same.

They’re not, but okay.

Do elaborate please.

Putting my socks on, She-Ra sat on my slipper (thus obscuring it). She basically stole my slipper.

Uh, okay.

NFTs use blockchains and cryptocurrency, each transaction is extremely energy intensive even on the supposedly “eco-friendly” cryptos*. In a time of mounting and ongoing climate crises it is not just negligent to support NFTs but actively malicious in pursuit of profit.

*also because they’re eco-friendly their generation is seen as being worth ‘less’ pure currency than others like Bitcoin and Ethereum, meaning that in order to attain the value that these pyramid schemers want, they have to generate more and more of the raw ‘coin’ which…you know, counteracts the point. If generating 100-eco friendly coins is the same energy cost and monetary value as 1 non-eco-friendly coin then uhh…nothing was accomplished.

On top of that NFTs and the crypto space in general absorb massive amounts of computer parts, especially graphics cards and other processors, in order to facilitate was is essentially funny money that exists solely to rugpull people and steal money. This puts other customers such as the humble and most oppressed minority of all (Gamers) in an awkward spot where prices are now inflated and stocks are limited, no doubt already made worse by the pandemic. I’ve seen a number of people talk about how they cannot buy parts for their PC due to it all being snatched up by crypto weirdos.

Furthermore, NFTs push to cryptocurrency in general: something that is (supposedly) unregulated and thus is rife with scams, money laundering, fraud and of course, financing crimes - actually bad crimes too, not just weed dealers.

For instance you will note that despite Ubisoft announcing their NFTs using the ‘Tezos’ blockchain, not one of their executives or investors or anyone who would have known about this before its official announcement had to declare re: any ownership they had of Tezos-coin to avoid insider trading laws. There have been a number of notable crypto pump-and-dumps done by youtubers. It is entirely reasonable and suspect to question if anyone at Ubisoft was in a position to do the same, but the lack of transparency in crypto makes that impossible. There has also been numerous documented and no doubt undocumented cases of people buying their own NFTs in order to inflate the value to try to resell later, something which is llegal with stocks, but notably not so with crypto (yet).

Finally, this inclusion of NFTs offers no actual benefits over what already existed before - you yourself claimed they were the same. To players, there is no benefit. The negatives I have detailed above are not offset by any facet of the system nor are they enriched for its existence.

TF2’s unusual hats are generated in exactly the same way as their other item drops. While I find TF2 (And CS’s) monetisation practices distasteful because it’s the same gacha predatory stuff as a bunch of other games, that someone would state they are the same as NFTs is either deliberate deception or ignorance.

Thankfully the latter of those has now been dispelled.

I finished Endwalker MSQ.

I will not spoiler, but I personally found the whole MSQ to be satisfying in it’s conclusion. Yes, there are questions and some criticism, but overall satisfying to the conclusion of such an amazing journey I embarked when Lintian managed to get me over to FFXIV.

And what a crazy few months it has been.

Things I love in FFXIV World:

  1. Ishgard. I love so love this place. It’s like when I discovered Gilneas but 100% better by the fact that it’s a living, breathing place and it’s going to have housing soon enough.
  2. Dragons: I’ve started doing the Omega raids and seeing the revelations in HW and EW, not to mention what the Omega raids tells you about them in FFXIV world, it’s tragic and yet awesome what role the dragons have played.
  3. ESTINIEEEEEEN! HE’S THE AZURE DRAGOON!
  4. Ysayle, my frosty bae.
  5. The Leveilleur Twins: Yes, they were annoying at first in ARR, but when questing through the HW & SB with each of them respectively, I started to regard Alphinaud with alot of brotherly love, since he reminds me of myself at times. Allisaie too as well, even if I got to feel it was something of a hero crush she had for the WoL, but I love her impulsive personality and reveals she has realistic flaws I myself can struggle with at times.
  6. Master Matoya (Both of them). Love the snark, but also because Y’shtola was the first Scion I ever encountered <3.
  7. HAURCHEFANT! My eternal bro <3.
  8. Hildibrand quests. Super fun
  9. Much, much, much more stuff I can hardly put into 10 point list.
  10. Mundane thing, but I love the crafting system. As someone who disregarded the crafting in other MMOs, FFXIV have made me love crafting because of the lore snippets and much more rewarding system it provides.

I’m just waiting on Dan Olson to finish his video on NFTs then I’ll link to that direct instead and save me a bunch of trouble type type typing in the future.

Also true and I fully understand this, but, I felt that one was self-explanatory. And hence why I would rather have someone say “Sorry I can’t make it right now” or “Something came up” instead of being left with the impression that they will show up when they actually don’t.

I was thinking to myself at one point if I should do an IC joke about an NPC dreaming about a star that was being evacuated enmass because said star was being cracked up by a massive sword and said star was populated by green men, long-eared, purple elezens and blueskinned walking goats.

And then get the response that how much drink he had lately.
