the UK government is currently collapsing in real time (some 30 government MPs have resigned already) and I picked a bad time to be in-my-bones-Tired
the equalities minister said
“I feel that we are…creating an atmosphere of hostility for LGBT + people and I regret I can no longer defend policies I fundamentally disagree with”
…
“I have to ask myself what Mrs Thatcher would have done”
and i do not have the energy to wonder how you say those two sentences without bursting into flames

Don’t call Tories rats. Rats are cute.
Tories are more like mosquitos; blood suckers.

Only a handfull of species and only the females suck blood, the males are polinators and the majority feeds on sugar.

And they only tend to suck blood when they’re going to lay eggs. I know.
Still blood suckers. Still insects. Still Tories.

There is also a fly that lays its eggs on the musquito needle and feeds on your flesh in some parts of the world.

I worked with them in my placement year.
Do they actually have a function in nature?
Oh sorry, I meant I’ve worked with parasites (people).
Some species don’t have a proper function in their various cycles other than to survive.

I might be a diehard socialist, but I feel like it’s necessary to offer a little nuance and explain why someone could say both statements without experiencing whiplash.
If I had to describe Margaret Thatcher without letting my biases influence my description, I’d call her a staunch libertarian. To put simply, she was an advocate of individual freedom and autonomy in almost every way, politically, economically, socially and so on. No one should be beholden to anyone else in any shape or form, especially not to the state. They should only have this autonomy take away from them if they would use it to harm others.
This general philosophy can be seen in how she treated LGBT issues. She voted in favour of the decriminalisation of homosexuality while simultaneously being responsible for Section 28 - the prohibition of the “promotion of homosexuality in the classroom.”
Her actions might seem contradictory, but consider it from a libertarian perspective.
On one hand, the decriminalisation of homosexuality granted greater social freedom to homosexual individuals, who were finally allowed to express their sexuality and be open about who they were.
On the other hand, Section 28 protected social freedoms by preventing children from being instilled with certain values in school and being allowed to form their own opinion without being told what to think by the education system.
Reminder: I don’t actually believe what I’m typing, I’m just exploring the libertarian point of view.
So, this gives us some insight into the view points of Mike Freer, if he really follows a similar mindset to Margaret Thatcher.
In his eyes, people who are LGBTQ should be free to be openly LGBTQ without fear of repercussions and… that’s it. Everyone else should be free to think, feel, say and do whatever they like regarding LGBTQ individuals, so long as their thoughts, feelings, words and actions aren’t “harmful.”
Ironically, he fails to see how this could foster a hostile environment but hopefully this explanation helps you understand how this guy could say two things so totally at odds with each other.
Now to have a cold shower. I feel dirty after that post.

Hey did you know you don’t have to devil’s advocate for Margaret Thatcher? She’s already burning in hell.

Is that like Fire Island?
Tax was only giving context

That does not in any way change what I said.
Thatcher also wasn’t a libertarian, and to say as such is so hilariously a-historical it’s a wonder anyone could hold that view if they actually knew her history. One need only look at her anti-union streak to see that, nevermind all the social conservatism, media censorship, and pro-police violence she got up to.
Instead of making a big long post playing devil’s advocate for the guy, they could have just said “he’s an idiot”. It’s much shorter, and actually accurate.
