Oh, you meant Batman.
This ainât just a Japanese thing, sorry to say.
It manifests a very specific way in Japanese culture and anime thatâs distinct from the batman variety. Subtly so, and immensely grating when it does. Stoic hero of âI grew up on batmanâ and âI grew up on animeâ are very different beasts.
Both are bad, by the way.
âYeah, itâs bad that they made Adam Jensen a stoic, but it could have been worse, they could have made him Japanese stoic.â
weird take there bud
Iâm not wrong. Itâs an extra level of grating bad, made worse by trying to smear a cultural convention where it doesnât belong.
What cultural convention is this
The bad one.
Itâs very noticable when someone is cast to play the batman or the japanese stoic (letâs call him samurai) and putting the samurai in the batman role makes an effect we call the uncanny valley as well as clumsily copying a story device and acting form that would be done properly in a japanese medium.
Jensen is just nightmarishly bland and it actively hurts these deus ex games.
Wow just imagine if youâd simply said that without weirdly bringing up an entire other culture to denigrate for no reason.
Whatâs your favourite stoic from a typical anime people watch while growing up anyway?
Sailor Moon or Goku?
I feel like Jensenâs personality is a deliberate attempt to evoke Denton which somewhat ignores that Dentonâs lack of expression and uh⌠flat voice performance are the result of the technical/budgetary limitations of a weird PC game from 2000.
Not denigrate; point out a mishandling of a trope. I genuinly despise the clumsy anime protagonism awkwardly grafted onto other things.
This is how I always took it, and I thought it honestly worked fine as an homage in Human Revolution. Their mistake was carrying on with Jensen as the protagonist, as Mankind Divided couldâve worked just as well with someone new especially after HR already had an ending in which Jensen died/went missing.
his face looks like it has less polygons than I have fingers
Honestly Deus Ex is better for itâs memes than anything else.

The joys of insomniac and new doctors.
Nigh on every movie in this age of franchised nostalgia bait is a remake or a sequel of an old property. This is nothing new and itâs losing its profitability.
Weâre rapidly approaching the year of the requel; revisiting the franchises we thought dead to do it all over again in what-ifs and retcons as is normal in the superhero genre where itâll start and snowball.
At least we might get a do-over of the star wars.
The MCU and its consequences have been devastating for entertainment.
