Pet peeves: The return (Part 3)

sounds about right :sob::sob::sob:

I am going to say that it is either Sins of the Father or Song of the Elves, the OSRS reimaginations of the Within the Light / Plague’s End / The Light Within, and The Branches of Darkmeyer / The Lord of Vampyrium.

It captures the basic story beats of the original questline in RS3, but omits much of the more cosmic themes that modern RS3’s storyline ended up adapting, and instead retelling the same story in the more grounded and mysterious world building Runescape used to have before The World Wakes.

Although I love Seren (and hate what I’m told she became in the end recently) and Zaros, the god related quests worked so much better when they were mysteries and their relation with the world was explored through their followers trying to bring back the return of the gods. The world felt more mysterious back then. Now you’re literally fighting the Literal Creators Of The Entire Setting.

The OSRS reimaginations of those quests feel like what could have been had they tackled on the Vampire and Elf quest finales in a pre-World Wakes setting where the gods hadn’t returned yet.

With Song of the Elves

you have a compelling villain in Lord Iorwerth who isn’t made out to be a Sauron to Morgoth, but instead a wounded and desperate man who wanted to do right by his people and reunite with Seren at any cost, but in his grief he was misguided into releasing the Dark Lord. But also the Dark Lord is a sympathetic figure with her being the darkness Seren created in her attempt to save the elves out of love when Guthix banished the gods, an act which would have killed them all due to her binding their lives to her.

All Dark Seren ever wanted was to be loved by her, and it’s implied the only reason she darkened was because Seren was horrified by what she had done in her experiments with death magic to create an immortal shard of herself to bind the elves to in her absence. This shard of Seren wouldn’t have darkened if not for being sealed away, and there’s a running theme of wounded love in Song of Elves that I really adored. The dialogue was incredibly well written. Also frick Essyllt, he can burn in hell.

With Sins of the Father

You have another compelling story written by the same guy who wrote Song of the Elves exploring the desperation of the civil war the Myreque were conducting, and the people they’ve lost along the way. Are they the same people they started off as if they’re willing to ally with other vampires in a bid to overthrow Drakan? They’re in bed with the same vampires who they’re trying to overthrow in the hopes of settling for a lesser evil, and the revelations along the way of what actually happened to Queen Efaritay and King Ascertes.

The reveal was beautifully written and I love the moment of contemplation pre-battle about how far you’ve come and making peace with the fact that not everyone will walk out alive if you’re going to storm Drakan in his own castle. The story ending on a hopeless note after building yourself up as a symbol of hope was a bittersweet twist when the lies were exposed. I am really looking forward to the final installment of the story and seeing how you, Veliaf, and Ivan recover.

" You are Gangrel!"

Ok then.

p.s. @Meruru we recently got Land of the Goblins in OSRS and confirmed they’ll be finishing The Chosen Commander at some point which I am immensely looking forward to. I love Zanik, simple as. Frick Bandos.

Also we’re getting some Desert Treasure II vibes with the Beneath Cursed Sands being released recently which tackles Amascut’s ascension. Believe me when I say that the lore is about to get spicy with the Menaphos foreshadowing in the end.

it’s goblin time

Got bored, so…

The Loras Official Ranking Guide for VtM Clans & Bloodlines

S-Tier - Banu Haqim, Cappadocian, Nosferatu, Tzimisce

A-Tier - Gangrel, Hecata, Malkavian, Lasombra, Ministry, Salubri

B-Tier - Toreador, Baali, True Brujah, Tremere

C-Tier - Ventrue, Panders, Giovanni, Ravnos

Although tbh my ranking of the various clans changes by the day, depending on whose lore I’m deep-diving at any given time.

I bump Lasombra down a tier because they are so obscenely overpowered that it’s not funny

My friend played a lasombra rebel in our campaign and if it came to combat she could instantly kill just about anything with shadow tentacles or banishing nerds to the shadow realm

aren’t lasombra just the funny hackerman?

Imagine rating things based on their mechanics and potential gameplay power rather than just focusing on how cool their lore is

That’s just the personality test correctly identifying you as an animal person.

I’m not too familiar with the RS3 lore, I have to admit. I did Plague’s End back in the day and then moved solely to OSRS in part due to the shift you mentioned. Everything started revolving around me a little too much for my tastes and while I’m not opposed to escalation or big, dramatic world ending stakes. I did also come back for the Tuska event for a month since it looked cool, but I was very much hit with a “I really don’t like this sports team-esque god stuff going on.”

Most of what I’ve heard about the game was from a friend who kept playing until recently, and they basically said “yeah, it’s pretty fatiguing with its constant escalation. They’ve trampled a lot of good story beats from previous quests.”

Very glad to hear the OSRS team is knocking it out of the park with keeping things from going too wild, while still telling great stories.

I’m always down for something Amascut related. Icthlarin’s Little Helper is a quest I remember fondly. Would 100% play Chosen Commander again too.

Hope they do Fairy Tale part 3 at some point too, although it’ll require revamped rewards or an entirely new quest. A lot of the rewards from it ended up being scattered elsewhere. I know the tooth implant you got that let you use the ring network without a dramen staff isn’t going to be a reward since you can travel without a staff as a diary reward now.

i’m just saying if you’re Sabbat and that powerful, why have you not simply taken over the world (of darkness)

Because the common mooks of the Sabbat can just be found absent-mindedly drooling on any night when they’re not just committing ultra violence

Their philosophy is that if you wanted a repeat of the same thing, you can just play the RS3 version with cosmic gods. With OSRS they want to stick to the spirit of the Old School project and capture the themes of how runescape used to be. That translates to the lore as well, dialing it back and retelling the same story through a more grounded lens.

I treat it as an alternate timeline where Sliske didn’t murder Guthix, but the same “fixed points” in the time happened in the context of this new timeline, thus the repeat of the same storylines through another perspective. There’s some canon justification for this school of thought with the cosmic Needle thing.

Now what I want to see is While Guthix Sleeps retold. My heart isn’t ready, but I know Lucien is inevitable.

This is my biggest concern with Fairy Tale III. They can finish the story and that’s cool and all - but what do we get out of it that we can’t already get through the Diaries? For a quest of FT3’s calibre, the rewards should be worth the effort if it retains the same classification.

Weird, there was only one question asking about animals (but also picked talking to animals as a power)

Whereas there were a lot more about computers and internet

I remember the brief time I did get invested in Runescape lore I was a big fan of Guthix

why did they have to do me like this

Personally I wish they’d have stopped at Ritual of the Mahjarrat. The Dragonkin goon Lucien, the Staff of Armadyl is shattered, and Sliske doesn’t tape it back together or whatever the frick he did with it.

It means you’re the best of us and the worst of us.

I’ve yet to see anyone else get Malkavian and it’s starting to make me wonder. Introspection begone. :no_entry_sign: :no_good_woman:

@Meruru thoughts on the datamined Dracthyr bulky model?
