the moment any friend of mine comes out with anti-trans rhetoric, they have one (1) chance to recant before they are no longer my friend

Yes but I saw you squinting!!!

So far I’ve never had that happen. Either I’m a repellant to it or (way more likely) just don’t have a big enough friend circle

I’ve seen reasonable people get dragged down to the TERF swamps though. They’ve been scraping off their lable and shoving their arguments into other discussions a lot lately.

Dear Star Trek: Strange New Worlds writers.

As good as your show otherwise is apart from the ending to this one episode, this is not what “Boltzmann brain” means. Google it up. Also, you botched the ending to an episode whose first 90% were awesome and you should feel bad.

Dear sci-fi writers in general.

Feel free to make up whatever space magic you want, but stop appropriating real-life scientific terminology that means something completely different.

Sincerely, a physics fan

I’ve generally given people a chance if they say something bigoted, since not always someone who says something bigoted is a bigot. It usually is very telling how someone reacts when they’re called out on it though. If it’s a ‘what? how?’ and you explain, and they respond with ‘oh sh- sorry, my bad’ it’s all good. Sometimes they need a little more explaining (especially if they’re a little more sheltered etc).

If it’s a ‘what? how?’ and you explain, and they respond with ‘how dare you!! no it’s not!!! you can’t say anything these days without someone getting offended raagh!!!’ and launch into more vitriolic stuff, it’s time for the snip snip.

As bad as that sort of rhetoric is, the way that the modern world handles the proliferation of information makes it very easy for anyone to be led down any sort of rabbit hole.

The only way to avoid being swept away by the unstoppable memetic tsunami that is the internet, internalising misinformation and being led towards extremism is to rigorously fact-check all information that you consume and to have a diverse range of information sources, preferably ones that contradict each other. That way, you’ll have a springboard that allows you to delve deeper into the subject, look at it from multiple points of view and come to your own conclusion.

But very few people actually have the time and the know-how to go through that process so have a little patience and try to help others with the process of questioning the things that they have been told.

My entire peeve is that guy

That’s what the one chance is for – if they’re willing to learn, then I’m willing to try to teach. If they’re not willing to learn, then that’s that.

As a fellow LGBT person, when I feel like I’ve had enough gloomy news about reactionaries seemingly gaining the upper hand, I remember these words by Sifu Hotman:

No friction, no flame;
No struggle, no progress;
No sweat.
How many times do we have to win
Till you realize that we have not lost yet?

in this case it was his second. he had a rant before about someone we used to know who came out as trans after a falling out between them and used some colourful language.

in this case it was invalidating trans-lesbians with terms that i dont want to eat another forum ban for. i genuinely just could not after it, no third chances

God, this is the absolute worst thing to experience from someone previously liked/trusted. The moment someone comes out as being willing to invalidate the identity and lived experience of another person just because of a disagreement or because they’ve wronged them is the moment I can’t quite look at them in the same way again.

Dehumanising someone is an awful thing to do, including when it’s done as a punishment.

i hear you on this. even though they apoligised for the talk, it was hard to feel comfortable around him again, though I feigned it for the sake of a friend whose convinced he’s just “miscommunicating over where he’s from.” which is weak af reasoning but i waited at least to see was that the end or would there be a repeat.

idc what arguments you have with someone, attacking them over who they are is disgusting and as low as you can get

Some people really simply don’t know better.

Just today, I saw a repost of Gamergate on an acquaintance’s newsfeed and talked to him about it, and instead of the expected lol SJW snowflake, he accepted my link to the RationalWiki article, said thanks, and promised to read it.

Also, psychologically, people are less willing to other when they’re in direct contact with the target of their othering. Othering proliferates when the outgroup is modeled as those people out there who are not me or you or any of our friends.

Anecdotally, in my country, Folk Wisdom ™ holds that LGBT people must hide in order to survive. Yet when my family life comes up in a conversation with complete strangers, I don’t shy away from telling that I have a wife, and the kind of people off the street that I’d expect to be ultra-conservative are quick to assure me that they have nothing against that, as if I was doubting them in the first place! Over seven years of our life together, I’ve seen a grand total of two outright hostile people, who were honestly nutcases overall to begin with.

Gay men are a different story, but even there, there’s a definite improvement compared to ten years ago. One can expect to get weird looks and maybe some hissing, but no longer outright physical violence. Can’t say anything about trans people, though, since all my trans friends are either non-transitioning or in stealth.

These words aren’t supposed to be together.

On that note, a lot of the discourse re: Ezra Miller’s recent antics is really problematic because of this. People intentionally misgender them despite (or perhaps because of) being reminded of them being non-binary. All it shows is a blatant disregard for them, as if trans and enby people need to earn the right for basic human respect.

No matter what Ezra Miller’s done, they deserve to be afforded basic decency.

Ezra Miller is an extremely problematic person but the fact they’re also queer is wholly incidental, yeah. These two things aren’t connected and any suggestion that they are is very unpleasant for sure.

Seen the mask drop far too many times when people see it as vindication to justify what they previously left unsaid.
