Would you like to hear my twenty-page argument for why Tolkien probably didnât conceive of his elves as having pointy ears
(Which doesnât matter one bit now, they have pointy ears because the fandom decided they do)
Giant warcraft style elf ears just arenât a very practical thing to have when wearing hats and helmets designed for people with regular sized ears. Ear socks would absolutely be a thing elves had invented, if only because ears get cold really easily.
Not all pointy ears elves in fantasy have big flappy ears, some of them have neat Vulcan style elf ears.

Mild peeve: The vulpera backpack transmog invisibilises your back-sheathed weapons/shields. The Wrathion backpack does not.
Both are fine but give me the option of to hide or not based upon how Iâm feeling instead of arbitrary one item does and one item doesnât. A staff clipping through the backpack mostly looks okay, but shields look really goofy.
In fairness you can pick shorter ears these days now, for BElves at least.

I rare few helmets in-game have actually visible âear holesâ, mainly the fey dragon set and one of the forsaken looking warfront sets have build in designs for races with ears.
There is probably a few more, but they are awfully rare as I said.
If the audience canât tell your elves and your humans apart without looking at their ears, you need to go back to the drawing board before some adaptation writer writes a scene where Galadriel hides her ears under her hair in Numenor and is like âhow do you do fellow humansâ.

I admit, if the elves in Lord of the Rings had human ears I wouldnât know they were elves at all.
likewise if hobbits were just regular human sized and didnât have bare-feet.
The visual does a lot to tell your magical races apart, if nothing else at least it sinks in the point they arenât human really quick.
Short elf ears are the best elf ears. My favorite is Arwen from the LOTR movies. Subtle and refined.
If he didnât want point ears he should have DESCRIBED HOW PEOPLE LOOK a little more
