Pet peeves: The return (Part 5)

I had to look it up by the subtitle, and wow!

Discords! There’s even stuff officially run by WotC/D&D Beyond itself, like this one matchmaking system where you keep all the items you’ve gotten through previous DMs and go on short campaigns or one-shots with others to get more items and XP. Basically, imagine World of Warcraft: Classic - Hardcore but with Random Dungeon Finder.

Regardless of this little factoid, yeah. Plenty of discords to find a party, plenty of websites and other means to play online with other people. The biggest hurdle you’ll find is finding a party whose schedule fits with yours, and building your first character sheet by hand because D&D Beyond doesn’t let you use content from books you haven’t bought with their advanced sheet maker.

some places like foundryVTT’s discord and roll20 forums have looking for group sections. I’ve heard… VERY mixed results from people who have tried them out.

I’ve read the TV Tropes pages on Starcraft II, and wow, it reminded me just how shallow and corny its writing is.

And what’s weird to me is that it’s a common feature of Blizzard games of that era. Not like Blizzard writing was stellar at other times, but games released in that time period (2010–2012), between Diablo III, Starcraft II, and WoW Cataclysm, have some of the most embarrassing writing Blizzard has ever put out, between massive retcons, characters with five-word characterizations at best, cartoon villains spouting endless one-liners at the player while being completely ineffective despite being hyped as 4D chess masters (looking at you, Belial, Narud, Amon)… And the over-the-top pulpy, comic-book, power-fantasy feel of it all.

And I mean, it’s not like Diablo II or Warcraft III were deep, but somehow a lot of dialogue from those games gives me goosebumps while dialogue from their sequels from that era just makes me laugh.

And I have to ask… What the heck was going on in that era? Were they so drunk from their success that they just stopped caring about the most basic elements of writing besides lazily stringing setpieces together for the thinnest plot necessary to justify the gameplay?

Wings of Liberty is a fantastic sequel in both gameplay and story right up until the last 15 seconds and I will die on this hill.

Heart of the Swarm is a rocky downward slope and Legacy of the Void is a 90 degree cliff into a vat of acid.

I’d say it was the result of hubris that developed during the golden age of Blizzard. 2008-2010 was around the point where they were making money hand over fist from WoW and probably started to see themselves as the rock stars of the gaming industry.
I imagine that influenced the creative process and likely led to them being a lot more casual about their storytelling, or at least less critical of their own storytelling.

Watched the new series of Castlevania, was finding it fairly mid until towards the end of the season where it starts to slap a bit.

Man that show got an increase in budget for animation.

ā€œAstarion, you look like you’ve been on the wrong end of a brawlā€“ā€

remembers he was on 5 health from being smacked by the owlbear

ā€œOh… oh yeahā€

His pretty face was very bruised up.

I just love that these memes are still being made occasionally:

How could a man say such weird things that he makes for an amazing C&C villain?

Severe brain damage from botched benzo withdrawal treatment hollowed out whatever inhibitions he once had and now he dresses like the clown he is.

The era of creationist youtube was short-lived, but interesting one.

I like how the player character tell him face to face that they weren’t fooled. Oh yeah? Prince of lies? Of course I’m expecting deception here…

See tv tropes genre savvy entry.

Just Duran backwards. Yeah, that was cringeworthy.

Absolutely, then rushing head first into the poorly thought out high concept Void angle. No concept of scale either as our hero Kerrigan casually culls planets of billions for a cool new zerg upgrade.

She somehow evolved high heels. Nah, gimme something Sil-like in pure gigerian horror. The dreadlocks was a good aesthetic, though.

I’ve failed at sleep.

It is monday.

Me: ā€œOkay last year was rough job wise but this year I’m sticking it to the man I’m not being paid to work outside my hours so they better believe if it doesn’t get done by 5 it aint getting done at all!ā€

Also me: first all nighter of the year and we’re only 4 weeks in after the holidays

All your hard work is necessary for your boss to afford a new car.
