Pet peeves: The return (Part 5)

I would prefer not to

OK Telaryn’s a coward. I turn to option #2 who is probably Elenthas? Can’t remember if he knows Elder Scrolls lore but we’ll find out

c0da is a script for a graphic novel in the elder scrolls setting written by michael kirkbride

the most important takeaway from it is the idea that the elder scrolls’ setting/tamriel is collective fiction free to be interpreted, personalized, and rewritten by whoever in whichever way they like

I know that Kirkbride is a bit craycray at least, though I can’t remember why or anything specific

augh i’ll bite you know i can’t resist

Kirkbride left Bethesda after Morrowind, but he felt a bit too attached to Vivec and amidst his drug problems he wrote a fanfiction allegedly set in the Elder Scrolls universe, but in the 9th Era and it’s a cyberpunk scifi story set on one of Nirn’s moons and the only connecting thread is that he wanted to insert Vivec in it. It’s a very incoherent (due to it being written under the effects of his years long drug bender) in its writing and makes very little sense, but it focuses on the drug fever dream adventures of Vivec and his new self-insert Sul.

People (very understandably) went ā€œWait, what do you mean Nords coat their shields with wasabi to lick it to counter the [hallucinogenic drug] farts of invisible space whales? That doesn’t make any sense Kirkbrideā€ to which he said ā€œCanon is whatever you decide it is dumbassā€ and now he desperately tries to make C0DA a thing by saying ā€œPsh yeah that new thing you like? It was totally in the C0DA firstā€¦ā€ and then he writes some weird fanfic about how Ayrenn is actually a mining robot from the moon colony in the 9th Era that time travelled to the Second Era to become the Queen of the Aldmeri Dominion.

Throw in really uncomfortable fixation on sexual violence against women and Kirkbride’s own real life threats of SAing a minor and you have C0DA.

It’s already been answered more comprehensively, but for the record my ES knowledge is very surface level stuff from TES3/4/5, and most of that is only half-remembered.

Though it turns out that might be c0da appropriate anyway so…

he wasn’t addicted to drugs anymore at this point

I absolutely loathe how every time someone that dislikes the guy feels the need to bring up the fact that he was an addict (before writing any of that!) and to then use that as some sort of talking point as to why whatever he produced is bad/not good/etc

you can criticize someone’s works without pointing a big finger and going ā€˜haha! addicted to antidepressants! no value!’

Anyway your post included the information I was looking for. I was reading something on rpghorrorstories that mentioned C0DA in the lens of being creepy but my brief google was just showing me that it was an incoherent skooma binge of a story.

Don’t forget his fetish for intersex people too

I’m not saying it as a way to gotcha him as a person (his comments about wanting to SA a minor with a coathanger is reason enough) but he himself admitted that he doesn’t remember writing a good majority of early C0DA because he wasn’t sober for years at at time. The bad writing is a direct result of his drug use.

Disappointing, only addicted to happy pills? I assumed it was something cool like amphetamines

why bring it up at all then

all of his most ā€˜out there’ writing is from long past his time of substance abuse, as much as the elder scrolls ā€˜community’ loves to pretend otherwise because it makes for an epic chungus tale

yeah unfortunately he was depressed (not cool) instead of a methhead (super cool)

the cute child soldier emojis are my favourite, personally

what the heck how come blizzard lets you say the word m*th but when i tried it profanity filtered me

don’t worry I’ll probably get another 24 hour ban for saying it within the near future

:pensive: pre-emptive Fs in the chat

Anyway since I’m not that big into ES lore I didn’t know much/anything about Kirkbride, besides hearing that he wrote the book while high (I just assumed it was like… hallucinogens or something and never looked into it)

It’s a common but false myth, the only confirmed thing he was frequently on while writing Morrowind is booze which I think goes for quite a lot of the working population

Kirkbride is many things, saying he is divisive is putting it mildly.
Man had ideas and some talent for sure, but urh, some of the stuff when given context to stuff he’s done both while sober and high is :grimacing:
