Pet peeves: The return (Part 5)

I wish there was a browser extension to filter marketing buzzwords out of software websites. Turning e.g. this

MinIO is a high-performance, S3 compatible object store. It is built for large scale AI/ML, data lake and database workloads. It is software-defined and runs on any cloud or on-premises infrastructure.

into

MinIO is a _________________ S3 compatible object store. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

(The AI part is particularly baffling. It is a server for storing files. Its basic operations are “upload file”, “download file” and “delete file”. What does that have to do with AI except that AI is the Cool New Thing so all marketing-speak is now obligated to mention it?)

I think I mentioned he prefaced his novel with “if he regrets it”. To which he doesn’t. But yeah, there are more races to come.

And yeah, the first book is pretty rough in trying to understand the magic and faith system, it’s pretty rough and there’s a reason why people drop the first book.

A rule I take with fantasy/sci-fi settings in general, I tend to look after I’ve read. “Ah, so that’s there.” There are a lot of characters and one of the latter books is -real- heavy (and unrepentant) with how many perspectives and characters you flip through.

I think even with it being my native tongue, there’s a lot you can easily miss if your eyes skip a sentence or your attention slips. It’s also a setting where once you finish it, you can see each individual accident lead to the train crash so it’s worth a re-read (after severe decompression).

Now you’ve got to tackle Deadhouse Gates, if you liked Gardens then you’ll fall in love with Deadhouse. The end of Deadhouse Gates is what settled my adoration for the series.

Both.

Or at least, Tolkien did both. He began with the languages, then decided he wanted some kind of world for them to exist in, then started writing ancient myths. But he also extensively used the “why is this true?” method of worldbuilding: sometimes he would write something into The Hobbit or LOTR on impulse, then spend a long time brainstorming how that fit into the established setting.

He also decided that Shelob could transform into a totally hot babe.

Elden Ring DLC adding PUNCH as a proper weapon set if the trailer is any indication.

Gonna break Radagon in two with my bare hands.

Man addicted to poison swamps: You know what this DLC needs?

I finished the ARR MSQ but the mandatory post-MSQ content is the most brain dead and negative fun I’ve ever had in an MMO, ever. I want to get to Ishgard, but I am having more fun not playing the game than force myself to do this post-MSQ :poop:

Shadowlands is a narrative master piece compared to what’s going on right now

The Wall sucks, it’s a slog and I don’t blame anyone who gets burned out on it

All I can say is it is worth the wait

Thank you for the input, it’s always greatly appreciated. When I do get to the writing, I think I can create something that people will want to read, and give it my own style, but I’m under no impression I could match the british language-virtuoso himself…

I’ll always laugh at this one, and the one from Obi-wan Kenobi talking about Ahsoka :stuck_out_tongue:

So I hear but that doesn’t really help when I have more fun not playing the game right now

It does not - I had to do just a bit a day, leveling up other jobs (it helped that Red Mage was THE reason I was playing FF14) and you’ll get there

Oh hey, welcome to The Wall.

I hate it there and I climb it at least twice per expansion.

I cannot redacted believe they did not cut the getting tea leaves quest out.

Wait, people hate post-MSQ ARR more than ARR? I though the post-MSQ was better :pensive:

It is collectively known as “The Wall” for a reason, back when square didn’t know what to do with an MMO endgame so stuck EVERYTHING into the main quest and its such a slog to get through.

There’s a reason I sort of quit once hitting it and only do a chunk at a time

I liked the ARR MSQ but the post-MSQ content is so irrelevant I can insta skip every single cutscene and dialgoue and still understand exactly what’s going on in the plot.

Yeah the post-ARR stuff before you get to HW sucks.

and if you’re a one-job andy you end up overlevelled for HW content, which I guess is both a blessing and a curse, but either way it feels weird.

I’m gonna be real here and say you guys are the first I hear say post-MSQ for ARR is worse than MSQ.
I guess I really just have weird taste compared to others

I wouldn’t personally say that post-ARR sucks, but ARR itself is definitely one of my favourite experiences on my first time of playing.

Rewatching SEED Destiny and I’d forgotten how hard it went in its first half before going entirely off the rails.

The fall of Junius Seven (“My daughter’s tombstone must be dropped and burned for this world to change”) was really well done.
Cagalli still got done so dirty though.

Still impatiently waiting for the Freedom movie to either get a fansub release or an actual western theatrical drop…
