We benefit greatly from his willingness to make adjustments to his work as it went on
I hate this honestly.
Weâve already talked before about Tolkien and some of his more disappointing personal views, but that was the thing that was also good about him, in that they were strictly personal to himself. As far as I know he was never one to use his religious views or otherwise to press it on other people and had a very âas long as youâre kind to others and not hateful, you can think and believe whatever you want in lifeâ mentality to other people.
can i just say that this is something thats always felt lacking to me in wow questing vs other games? a lack of continuation from zone to zone. sure its present thesedays minorly for the most part but for years every zone or questline felt disjointed from others. too stand-alone with no continuity ultimately. lotro is fantastic for it, as was gw2 and eso. wow could benefit from it
I recall Cataclysm revamped Tirisfal â Silverpine â Hillsbrad being fairly good in how it felt like a continued story of seeing what the Forsaken were up to and how their story was progressing. I generally agree with you though.
And that was one of the better examples of it I agree. Even for the memey times that Cataclysm were subjected to it was a decent overall story.
A case before Cataclysm I became more aware of because of a video I watched was the âearly human experienceâ of classic wow. Elwynn - Westfall - Redridge - Duskwood. Which was a good if more obscure at the time continued storyline of the corruption and strife in the kingdom of Stormwind.
beyond those two not many more examples come to mind before MoP
WoW tends to have it on occasion, but its usually only 3-4 zones and not always.
But when they do have it, its great.
With Bingo Boffin as I mentioned from Lotro, it starts as a early level(like level 3 or 5) quest in the shire. He is a hobbit who wants to go on an adventure and you slowly help him do that. The first couple of quests are things like putting his affairs in order, teaching him how to swim in the nearby river and then finally setting out.
Then through out the entire game, you follow a quest chain to meet him in the story zones you progress through, as he adventures alongside you. Each zone has 2-3 quests for him before telling him to meet up at the next zone. And it carries on all the way to the very end of the entire plot and game.
You also get nice house and cosmetic rewards for questing with him, like a hat rack for your house or different paintings etc.
The end to interconnected zones really came with Legion, since at that point they let you select zone order freely. WoD was pretty great for a continuous building levelling story, even as hatcheted as it was.
It came back a bit, somewhat, in Shadowlands, but that was a mess all on its own. Dragonflight didnât do much of it either.
I donât know, Iâve always found the Silverpine â Hillsbrad progression very jarring. We go from a dark dramatic story of relentless assault, betrayal, and a man giving up his military offense for the sake of his daughterâs life to slapstick comedy breaking the fourth wall.
we dont talk about dumas or johnny awesome
If WoD had been given some more love and time, I am 100% certain it could have been one of the best expansions.
Because it had so much potential and what is there is pretty good if you take away all the cut corners.
it was an expansion on orcish and draenei lore the likes of which we hadnât gotten since TBC. i daresay an even greater one for it being the first time we saw what draenei society was like on draenor. shadowmoon valley and frostfire ridge will always stick with me as being two of wowâs best zones. breaks my heart their near impossible to rp in now.
on the notion of levelling continuity i will often cite eso as being a good case for how it can make questing feel rewarding. seeing npcâs from your tutorial zone show up expacs later to become someone of prominence for the expac is surreal.
one of the summerset expac antagonists being a side character from a side quest in morrowind was also one of the best questing twists ive seen in a while.
Cataclysm in a nutshell tbh. Good to decent stories peppered, or outright smacked in the face with, total tonal whiplash.
I shall take this moment to note, on an unrelated note, that the warrior hero talents, at least for fury, are nonsense. Utterly worthless.
Much like cataclysm.
eso summersetâs quests mostly just made me mad tbh
speaking of expansions and making me mad god I hate the notion of âpay double and you can play the expansion three days earlier heeheeâ WoW is doing now, just let me in already losers
We asked someone to help us help them and they may be from The Place Necromancy Comes From (theyâre the janitors of the unliving, cleaning them up so they can be alive again)
That doesnât sound like even technically doing necromancy. There I was expecting you to have to thread a needle around what really is necromancy and theyâre just like âeh, you know a guy, jailâ.
What is this, every single âjusticeâ system prior to the 1980s?
I hope they at least adjust comp stomp back to being set to level 70
Itâs such a rare event and now itâs up but you canât queue for it because you need to be 80⌠itâs not like it gives you a lot of exp so who cares if some people get a tiny bit of leveling exp while grabbing their transmog currency
And itâs not pvp, so who cares about having the extra talents?
How come ive been replaying it last week and im curious.
Though altmer in general do have that effect. Alaxon deez nuts
Honestly as much as I am hyped for playing War Within on its actual release(I dont got the early access), the pre-purchases practices they have pulled thrice now has really put me off on Blizzard quite a bit as I found them incredibly scummy and frankly immoral.
The three Iâm talking about being: Extra Tenderâs for pre-purchase(while also ramping up price of items in the trade post), early access to the expansion as a whole, and now the comp stomp change to encourage people to get the EA.
It is a really, REALLY bad move from Blizzard that has soured alot for me.
Apparently LOTRO still doesnât have good HiDPI support? Launcher fonts are tiny on a 4K monitor and apparently the game itself isnât much better, looks like Iâll have to run it scaled.
Yeah it is still a bit dated but they are updating things regularly.
Also I believe they are finally doing an update to monster play after likeâŚhow many years now? Itâs next after the big hobby addition that just came out.
