Phasing question

Hi
what is phasing? is tied to each character of mine? if yes, does it change with each server?
thanks in advance ^ ^

Which phasing are you talking about, phasing relatedto quests, or zone layering?

Phasing due to questing is personalized depending on your progress or the setting you’ve chosen for the zone through an NPC.

Zone layering [sharding] is automated, the servers automatically populate shards and drop people into new shards to avoid overcrowding. It’s an incredibly flawed system though, often having you change shards while you’re, eg, killing a rare causing it to disappear as you swap shards.

And in War Mode faction balance us nonexistent where often it’d be 10:1.

I believe shards are dependant on your connected realms to default on. Joining another’s shard, who’s CR to yours when you leave you remain in their shard still… but leaving someone’s group who isn’t a CR you phase back to your default shard.

ill try to explain it .
phasing means you are in a realm in a zone and your friend is standing in front of you but you cant see him ,
this happens when he is on wm off and your in wm on .
or he is in a quests that the quest sends him to another time line.
in some zones you cant see your friend if he is not max level.
some quests do the same in a zone and you have to have the same quests to see the other player.
in short going to other phases in one realm (this is not realm change )

there are other things about it but since only 10% of wow players use that. so its not important for you so ill stop there

The easiest way to explain phasing is to give examples, and the earliest example is the death knight starting zone. Once you reach a certain point in the zone’s story you’ve cleared the area of humans and the scourge now controls it, so there are no more enemies there, you have friendly NPCs instead and you move to the next area with humans to continue the story. Part of it is that you can’t see or interact with players from different phases.

Phasing was originally done to have an evolving area or zone, that once you reach a certain point the area changes. In WotLK it was just NPCs and objects, in Cataclysm they could change terrain as well. In MoP they started with switchable phases of present and past Theramore, and in WoD you had this with the Blasted Lands. In Legion Silithus got a present amd past phase, and in BFA they did it to quite a few zones.

BFA also introduced war mode which populates a different phase entirely, and Shadowland introduced timewalking campaigns (Chromie time) which also has a separate phase.

Sharding between different realms is something different, and is done to manage the player population.

If you group with a different player you’ll always be put in the same shard if you’re in the same zone. Grouping doesn’t overcome phasing however, and if you’re in the same zone with a group member in a different phase there will be an icon on the party frame telling you that’s the case. If the issue is war mode or timewalking hovering the icon will tell you that, otherwise it just says the player is in a different phase.
