Picking a main?

Hi guys, my first time posting here!
I’m sort of struggling to pick a character to progress through shadowlands. I’ve levelled 3 so far (priest,Dk,shaman) to 60. Without any of them standing out and making me want to carry on
I am tempted to level a different character but I’m worried about getting burnt out. Any tips on sticking to a character or a what makes you play your character? Would be appreciated!

well, i usually stick to one character because im too lazy to keep up with the gear on my alts, so they usually lag behind.

what works for me is setting myself goals. like, clearing the raid on heroic, the m+10/15 achievements etc. this way you usually kind of have to stick to one character.
i just pick the class/character i want to play of the majority of shadowlands and then stick to it, trying to reach my goals.

Depends vastly on what’s making you swap characters. Are there any key elements which u aren’t finding in these classes?
Lack of mobility /survivability / rotational pacing?

A good start would likely be to establish what u aren’t liking about those classes so u can look for classes which give you those things your wanting

If I didn’t have to be the healer, I’d play Survival Hunter.

It’s never been easier to test classes before commiting, just make trial chars.

I’ve played every class in this game more or less over the years so I know exactly what I like the most.

This. What you like/dislike about a character can be highly personal and is often more important than you’d think.

It might be their abilities, it might be their transmogs, it could just be you don’t like the way they swing their weapon or cast spells. It could be the “feel” of playing them.

Your main is a character you’ll spend a huge amount of time with so if you can work out what’s important to you in the character then it makes it much easier to find one you’ll stick with.

I just level several alts and whatever sticks becomes a “main”

issue with this is.

a level 47 trial character doesnt show u the feel of it entirely… playing alot of clases with Low haste… or without the borrowed power systems etc etc can feel alot worse then the reality

trial and error is likely still the best way to get a real feel of classes as playing against a target dummy with a random Selection of talents at level 47 wont build a true nature of the gameplay.

I just found the runes with Dk ruined the rotational pacing for me. I realised on my priest that DoT gameplay wasn’t going to work for me and my shaman I just found elemental clunky! I’m actually sort of thinking Ret paladin as my last resort now. I like the builder spender idea! I do usually clear AoTc and time a few 15s. Just never been so lost in my ways of playing this game! Now I’m worried about burning out before getting to enjoy it

Indeed, just hit a bunch of arenas and bgs, target dummies won’t do it. I know it’s not perfect, but you can generally tell if you really really like or dislike something.

Otherwise leveling up has never been faster too so you can as well do that. But it’s still more commitment esp. if op wants to settle down on sth asap.

Also idk if I’ve mentioned it here but for main char pick class not spec, otherwise it’s quite risky in WoW and you might reroll often.

Or you know, just scratch that and play druid :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

We have it all.

My suggestion is go with the one you’ve invested the most time into.

If all your alts are on par you cannot choose what to main because they are all your mains, at least that’s the problem I’ve had in the past and it caused me to be indecisive.

But now I do reps, sanctum upgrades, Misson tables, professions and renowned quests, campaign ect, on this dude and my alt does the basic thing on everything and gets renowned by catch up systems.

Funny my alt is better geared then my main but it doesnt feel as complete.

This is sort of where I’m at, at the moment. I’m behind as it is (Started roughly 2 weeks ago or less in this expansion) Now I’m already behind and don’t really have a main because I played quite a lot of different chars on par in BFA. So bit of a head scratcher!
I think a multi class role is what I’m gonna go for. Although I’ve been reading about how this xpac isn’t friendly to multi specs?

It’s only unfriendly to multi spec in that you need multiple legendarys. And most specs have different main stats needed. So new gear needed too.

You seem to be stuck in the “grass is greener” cycle. What do you plan doing end game. Pve? PvP? Rated? Casual? It’s usually best to Actually play what you enjoy. Not what is the meta.

It ain’t that bad, I guess it depends on class…

I’m currently playing 3 specs and my covenant works well for them. I delegated a different soulbind to each of them and have a leggo on 2 so far, maybe 3 soon, but man am I running out of gold, haha.

Also I would prefer having more haste on boomkin but current gearing is slow so I just have bis stats on feral for now.

It’s not too bad, I have my 3 different soulbinds catered to different specs but I mainly play arms and Prot.

Access to a healer or tank role can act like a golden ticket into different form of content, but if you like the fantasy of say your enhancement shaman, shadow priest or Frost dk, it shouldn’t stop you from just playing that one role.

The only way you will achieve a main is by investing and achieving on one charcter, then you’ll notice you won’t be so invested in your others because you won’t feel that same bond.

Example how on how I chose my main as warrior this expansion is purley because of class fantasy.
Pvp or Pve isn’t something I really considered, I just wanted to feel like badass charging in and smashing people in the face with a shield or swinging a big axe around.

Hi! Yeah I seem to be lost in this endless cycle I’ve never been in before! I’m not chasing fotm really. I’m just a bit of a casual that usually gets aotc and times a few 15s. So I know any class or specc is viable! Just don’t want to burn out levelling before I enjoy the expansion

Are you pugging or with mates? Not going with a FoTM (even though its an entire 4 month patch). Is a very bad idea if you intend to pug. Expect spending many hours to get in a key 14+. Would highly recommend boom/mage/hunter/WW/rogue to save yourself literally hundreds of hours over the next couple months if you gonna pug stuff. Got a mate who’s a ret pally 215 and 1.2k. So far he spent 6 hours trying to get in pug 14+ and gave up and respecced holy.

However if you planning to do it with mates, or a static group. They play what ever ya want and go have fun. Rets really simple and fun, absolute avoid spec for keys unfortunately. Holy and prots doing good though.

What do you care about most? Appearance? Gameplay? Roleplay?

Is there a class or type of class that you’re drawn to, in WoW or other games?

If you really don’t know which class to take, go to warcraft logs, select either raid CN or Mythic+ and select overall damage. You will get list of specs sorted by highest damage. Pick first 3 or 4, perhaps skipping those that you know you will not enjoy and search for them on YouTube or Twitch TV. See what people can do. Then create new trial characters and try them on dummy. Not sure but if you can join bg or one dungeon, try them there. This would be one way.

This is how I picked monk, hunter, and dh. Two of which I don’t currently play and one that I still do; the one is WW. I did not realise I would enjoy the monk. I never considered playing it. Yet, it is the second main right after Druid with one of the best rotations.
