So I haven’t had issues in the past with playing casters/healers while playing with ~150ms, but once this character hit 50 and I could select a covenant, I noticed Spear of Bastion constantly missing even though it was cast while the enemy is definitely within the cast circle. I’m thinking it may be a latency thing, and will ultimately make Warrior pretty unplayable (at least Kyrian, and possibly most melee in general).
Before dumping too much time into gearing the Warrior for Arena, should I just save myself the headache and stick to casters or healers since I’ll always have high-ish latency?
Well, look at the run speed of a character and look at the movement they can do within ~360 ms. Because 150 ms home & world means it takes 150 ms for the information to reach you, to you then reacting to it, to you then sending your reaction to the server. So the roundtrip of all that becomes roughly around 360 ms.
A caster/healer isn’t as limited by characters moving as a melee is, since a melee gets cut off from doing damage as soon as they’re out of melee range while a caster/healer can always get the spells out as long as they’re within 35/40 yard range and within LoS.
But well, since spear is a targeted area of effect with its own small animation, it just depends on how far a character can move within those ~0.36 seconds. If that’s enough time to move out of the area you’ve targeted, then yeah, you’re screwed.
(inb4 someone mentions their ms as well, all that matters is what the server accepts as having been done and at what timing.)
Ahh, thank you for that, I didn’t even consider the roundtrip time effecting my latency even more. I was looking at it like 150ms would be OK if that’s all it was, but your explanation makes more sense, especially when you throw Spear into the equation and how that spell works.
Now if only there was a way to exchange one level 60 for another
Well, what you really need is just a reliable way to slow enemies. That roundtrip time is still fine-ish to play with, but you need to keep slows up to make it work well.
Also, you should set your lag tolerance to ~250 ms, considering your ping is 150. Just add a +100 to your ping value, to determine what your lag tolerance should be.
