Please someone explain this to me

These are from Wikipedia: (title chain mail, mail and plate armour)

" Both were commonly made of [wrought iron], but some later pieces were made of heat-treated steel."

So why do leatherworkers make mail armour again and not blacksmiths !?!?

Because Mail classes start (or used to, idk) as Leather wearers.

They probably wanted to make leather be useful for more things than just leather armor

If blacksmiths made mail & plate armor then ore would be the required material for Jewelcrafting, Engineering AND Blacksmithing (wich has to supply gear for 50% of the armor types) and the demand for ore would just be too big

…and plate wearers used to start with mail. So probably this isn’t the reason.

Low level blacksmithing used to make mail though

The answer to the OP is “Legacy reasons”

Does it really matter?

Probably just game mechanics. I mean technically leather gear will make used of stuff like buckles and studs which require metal. But it would be ridiculous to have blacksmiths craft 2 armour types and be required for a third as well.

I think it’s so two “craftables” are made via leather ie leather and mail. Mining for example has rings, plate and engineering stuff come from it. Throw mail on top of that and leatherworking becomes this wierd tradeskill that is the only one to utilise skinning, whereas all the others “double dip” which gathering skill they need. If that make sense.

Aren’t most of the mail items made by LWs basically animal scales slapped onto a shirt?

Doesn’t sound terribly blacksmith-y to me.

Well, if BS made end-game Mail as well then Shamans and Hunters would have had to swap professions after the old level 40. While Mail is useless for Plate wearers after 40. I guess we are just too used to it now.

I wouldn’t mind having Mail be put in BS now, proffs are easy to swap and it would put less demand on LW materials for Legendaries. But I don’t see this happen, it’s just been too long like this.

i suppose because, depending on which chainmail armour we are talking about, it can also involve hard leather/leather scales or raw hide linked together with chain links.

there are serveral different variations of chain mail/mail, depending on what time period and location in the world you look at.

overall i guess its just to give leatherworking some flavour since i dont imagine hunters to walk about in the forest in full plate/iron armour, making their location known to everyone immediately for example.

That’s my understanding. It’s like a leather shirt with chain links on it to add protection.

in my mind the chain links with scales also offer a great amount of movement and flexibility without losing protection.

a shaman performing his rituals would be very tiresome if he wore a full set of iron armor and a hunter can reach for the arrows in his quiver/bow on his back easier and can be sneaky if need be without being too loud or getting encumbered.

edit: scrambled up a sentence

Plus blacksmiths get to craft weapons, so spreading out the crafting a bit is a good idea.

Personally I’d get rid of Mail, it doesn’t fit the Lore of either Shaman or Hunter. Hunters should be in leather as it doesn’t jingle, it’s silent fo stalking prey in the wilderness would be easier.
Shaman culturally are inspired by Native American or African witch doctors neither of which wore chain mail.

Perhaps a new type of Fur could be used? Not much of what I wear as Mail actually looks anything like real life Mail anyhow.

well, but most armor types dont really look like anything in real life either so i guess its just the fantasy element.

Sounds kinky!
