i left mid-to-end shadowlands, partly due to the lore getting real ‘ok lets not mention the giant sword in the planet ever again’, partly due to irl things, and partly due to some stuff going on ingame too. too much stress.
however, ive been considering revisiting the game… im just a bit lost at how to catch up, lorewise.
like other than there being a lot of scalies around stormwind all of a sudden (are they openly just dracthyr in stormwind or whatever now?) and dragons being found on some island(s), im a bit lost where to start tbh.
oh and apparently there was a marriage between the nightborne and belf leaders or something? honestly, brain’s a mess.
ps. also looking for active guilds. probably not coming back with aly at this point, but im craving casual/fighting rp so if theres any military, mercenary or similar guilds around gimmie a shout.
The best place to catch would actually just be to play through the Dragonflight levelling experience, they do a decent-ish job of explaining what’s going on. There was a timeskip between Shadowlands and Dragonflight but you’d be hard pressed to find any mention of it in current lore besides a throwaway line here or there; the Dragon Isles story is good enough to get the gist of everything.
I’d also recommend making a Drachtyr character at least once to experience their intro and understand how they ended up in our world all of a sudden. You will likely still have questions after all this, and that’s okay. But at least it gives you some basic context to start with.
alright, thanks! do you remember how long the timeskip was? just gonna be thinking about what my characters would’ve done in that time. (including a few with aborted storylines due to events the last time i was there, but thats not so relevant.)
If you can find just a summary of the DF story (or if someone will provide one, here) if you don’t want to play it, I think that’s honestly good enough. Since the story already came and ended, I’ll just note down some changes I can currently think about that are maybe important for RP.
Dragonkin as allies is now commonplace.
Yseras daughter Merithra is now the Dreamer and Ebyssian is now the Earth-Warder.
The birth of the world tree Amirdrassil moves the primary night elf settlement to the Dragon Isles.
The night elves and the undead have (at least officially) made their peace with each other and a handful of wrongdoers have been accepted back into society.
Tyr’s Guard has worked together with the Aspects to successfully resurrect Tyr.
The Alliance returns to Gilneas and works to rebuild it. They have also made peace with the undead.
Hatuun and Velen are discussing a potential future among either of them for the Man’ari Eredar.
The Thorignir drakes are freed from Odyn and they move to the isles together with the Netherwing of Outland.
Elisande could possibly return, as we see a kinder version of her exploring timelines. (Not so much important, just fun )

Four years. I wouldn’t stress too much, most RPers haven’t really bothered to think about it, though if you do want to use that time to close or start some storylines, then go for it - its your best bet.
BfA was taking place in years 33 and 34 after opening of Dark Portal (ADP).
Shadowlands was years 35 and 36 ADP.
Then we got 3 years long timeskip after that, meaning we skipped years 37, 38 and 39.
Dragonflight started in year 40.
While we don´t know how long DF will last, given the trend of Blizzard moving towards the 1:1 ratio of real time and lore time, I´d say it´s pretty safe bet to say that we´re now in year 41 and War Within will start in either late 41 or in 42.
For reference, Warcraft 3 was 20-21, The Frozen Throne was 22, Vanilla started in 25 and Cataclysm in 28.
As Faelenn said, most people just ignored the timeskip, although I´d suggest still taking into account the current year in lore and the time between events in the lore. Quel´Thalas fell bit over 20 years ago, not 17, Cataclysm was 13-11 years ago, not 10-8, and so on.
