Preparing my PC for Shadowlands, need your Help

Hello Everyone,

I want to prepare my old PC for shadowlands and would like to ask you for some help in suggesting me what needs to be changed. I want to play on Ultra settings without any problems on my 32" screen at 1440p 75GHz

I don’t plan to play any other games on my PC, so i don’t want to buy something that is Overkill just for WOW - Shadowlands.

PC Specs
Monitor: Omen by HP 32" - 2560 x 1440p 75GHz
Graphics Card: Geforce GTX 970
Processor: i7 - 4771 3.5GHz
Ram: 32GB
SSD: 256GB
Motherboard: Z87-PRO
PSU: 650W

First thing to change is of course my GPU, so i’m thinking of - RTX 2070super

Your help will be appreciated if you could give me your advice. Thank you for your time.

While i absolutely agree that you need to upgrade your GTX 970 (i had one till last year too, amazing card for the time), i just cannot recommend getting a 2070S at this point in time.
The RTX 3080 are out more or less (Nvidia botched the release) and the 3070 is coming on October 15th for 499€+.

So either you get the 3070 if you can, or the cheaper option would be to just get a 1660 Super for half the price which is enough for 75hz at 1440P (in WoW) and get a better GPU if needed in 2 years or so.

Obviously the 1660S does not have hardware raytracing, but believe me, it is not worth the money in WoW (playing on a 2070S and it halves my FPS in scenes with lots of shadows :P)

Your CPU could also use an upgrade if you got the non-K, non overclockable version.
That would require a new Mobo and RAM too.
Depending on how often and hardcore you raid it would definately be worth it.
You will not get 75 FPS in a real raid situation with that old I7.
My Ryzen 3900x even drops below 60 on some bosses

I expect 2070/2070S prices to drop a lot at 3070 launch so either it’s 3070 for same price or 2070S for much lower price. On used market 2070 is selling even as low as 2060 prices which will drop less and later. Also alongside 3070 AMD Navi 2 cards will be launching which can provide better value for money - even if not at 3090/3080 level.

I thought at first to wait for the new RTX 3070 but im just not sure if all other parts will handle it, as im sure with that new GPU i need new psu, cpu and motherboard.

I do plan to buy completely new pc next summer so i thought ill just upgrade for now maybe with something cheaper.

Or will my spec handle the 3070 and i should wait for that, so then when i build new pc ill have the good gpu already .

I can also buy 1070ti from a friend that asks 170e for it, would that be a big upgrade from 970 and would it be enough to play on ultra on 1440p 75 GHz

2070 super is a 215w tdp card, 3070 220wp. no problems there. 650w is plenty, at least if it’s a decent power supply, but if it’s not you’d have that same issue with the 2070 super. 1070 ti 180w tdp so bit lower but fairly similar.

i wonder if the supply of the 3070 will be better enough than the 3080 launch that they’ll actually be available for purchase. good chance you won’t be able to buy one. thankfully rdna2 announcement end of oct as well and they’ve “hinted” on twitter that they’ll have good supply, whatever that means.

1070 ti ~80% faster than 970. i have a 1080 which is really similar to 1070 ti and it’ll do about 100-120 fps in boralus at 1440p without AA (but doesn’t because cpu bottleneck, i have a 9900k) if that gives you an idea. 3070 should be about 80% faster than the 1070 ti.

it’s hz not ghz for monitors by the way.

So i think it would be smarter for me to buy the new high end card when i can, so when i will build my new rig i will have it already.

Sorry about that ghz - hz

yeah that makes sense. try to snag a 3070 mid-oct if you can or wait until late oct for amd announcement, up to you.
