Prepatch is out. How do we feel?

The prepatch is out, whats everyones thoughts on each spec.

I am mainly messing about on WW just now.

To be honest i logged in, changed my appearance and logged out.

ToD - Nice that its an execute, the cooldown makes it a bit forgettable for me.

Xuen - Basically teh old ToD now with fancy animation and passive damage from our pet.

Expel harm - I had this through essences in BFA. The essence gave resources which was all it was good for and i always thought it was bland. Now its baselline and nerfed i think its a joke.

Being able to equip a 2 hander is nice and the fact i can put my brewmaster staff on my back is nice. Just doesnt provide any benefit really and should never have went away. We just dont have an animation to use it.

I dont even want to go into bugs, dead talents and lack of any unpruning. Its just depressing. Heres hoping when SL finally drops they will change my mind.

I guess I am back to playing other games until the next part of the pre-patch releases.

Doing fine and doing decent damage in WW, I guess I have low standards/expectations from the class/spec as I am quite happy playing Monk in any iteration. The class has always ticked the most boxes for me out of all classes and I take what I get from the devs and I’m still able to be competitive running M+ and have fun with the rotation and aesthetics/flavor of the class. And about all the bugs, well I may be blind as a bat but I don’t notice any of those bugs while playing the game except for the one that bothers me which is to not be able to use DPK when both FoF and RSK are on cd, other than that I don’t even notice any other bugs. Could the class be better? I suppose so just like there’s always room for improvement in any class. Is the class/spec bad and feels bad to play atm? Not by a long shot, not for me at least and if there aren’t any further changes coming to the spec in SL than I predict I’ll be happy playing Monk. I have also learned that as long as a player keeps his ilvl relevant the class will always be competitive in the right hands on M+ even if the dps charts show it as bottom tier.

Sigh, here in lie the problem.

It is fun but havent you seen the bug lists and how it affects your damage and game play?

Arent you concerned we have so many dead talents?

Aren’t you concerned you will be picked behind DH, rouges etc?

Aren’t you concerned the utility you bring can be brought by MW or BM and they have their own issues too?

Do you think its acceptable that we have pretty much taken the same talents for the last 3 expansions bar a few niche exceptions?

Is it acceptable we have had little to no commutation their vision for the spec or class?

they have had 2 plus years to ensure this is ready. Again we are going to have to rely on borrowed power to shore up the classes pitfalls. I wish they would focus on the core specs.

Sure the class is fun and playable It doesnt matter if youre the one percenter or a casual. Its just not acceptable for a AAA company. No new abilities (Core class), long term bugs/talent balancing/scaling issues.

In the old days you used to get patches that done more than what we received in SL.

Its getting a bit like fifa, looks cool, its playable but ultimately nothing really changes and the same issues prevail, just gimmie your cash!

Im the sucker though, ive ploughed time and cash into something i love i just hate to see the direction its heading in.

WW seems ‘ok’, not much change.
Not keen on the new ToD. It’s rare that I get to use it now in bg’s & when I do, an RSK seems to do the same thing.

The 2-hander is handy, I switch between WW & BrM on the fly, so it’s good when forgetting or fumbling around in my bag to re-equip weapons. I prefer the bare knuckle appearance of the WW, but it’s nice to have the option.

Expel Harm should be 10s (&or Reverse Harm PvP talent reduces it to 10s).

Tried it yesterday, did a few dungeons and tried what new things they gave us.

  1. ToD
Biggest issue that I have right now is the 3min cooldown of ToD, it is just too long of a CD to have such “little impact” as it is an execute, it would be aceptable if the cooldown was reduced to 1.5min, or 30sec even that would bring alot of utility in dungeon packs and could bump us up a bit in raids where there are adds to prioritize. The 3min seems to punishing for what it does.

  2. Xuen
Xuen being a “pet” I do like that and the fact you can optimize it in terms of damage where you can try and pack a “big punch” there.

  3. SEF
SEF still bothers me as the MoP iteration of it was the best one, and allowed us to fit in a specific niche, where we could do OK dmg in single target, but we would excel at council fights. Right now, it just doesn’t feel right/usefull to press it.

  4. Expel Harm
This is just a button to press right now, low heal, even lower damage but gives resources, it just feels that they gaves us that back to justify unpruning something.

  5. Fort brew
Really like having another survivability CD, happy to see that back.

  6. “Rotation”
The good thing about WW monk, is how the spec plays, it will always be fun and the “rotation” makes it.

  7. Hit Combo talent
Why is this talent not baseline and added to the spec itselft it is a buff to our mastery, and doesn’t make the gameplay better or interesting.

The spec performs alright, but there are a few things like ToD having 3min CD that just feel clunky, when you want to execute a pack of mobs. While other classes just proc their executes back to back, we use it once and can’t use it on the next 2 packs.

You have just described the state of the company, when they were pruning classes they were also pruning their HR and Dev teams. Activision ruined Blizzard.

You have also just described the state of every other class, just read the forums. This is not a Monk only problem.

Now the short answer to your questions is no, I am not concerned because I feel the class works and I don’t need new talents or new perks to feel excited about and I don’t feel any handicaps to the class. I always have a spot for M+, so I can’t feel any of those negative effects you describe, in honesty if people hadn’t compiled a list of bugs I wouldn’t even noticed they existed except for one. Yeah I’m all for fixing bugs but as for design I am sceptical, I don’t like changes just for the sake of and I don’t like to change what’s not broken and the class design is not broken for me.

Obviously this is all personal opinion and I understand other people may feel bored and need changes to the class, just be careful what you wish for, I have read many complaints about changes… I feel right now then bugs aside the mechanics and the spec works quite well. People are never happy and the devs will never be able to appeal to everyone so you may end up in the group that they didn’t appeal to.

I know what you’re saying and I may be over dramatic. I think I make myself angry when i think about it too much.

When you consider BFA was the longest expansion, they reused Uldum/Vale and added assets to make it corrupted, the reused SW and ORG for the visions. They removed tier sets and added armour type sets, Then for pre patch they reused old armour sets, old zones and bosses for pre patch, it just makes me think about how much time and resources is spent on borrowed power systems and fixing them. That time could be spent on content. What have they been doing?

The only expansion i enjoyed borrowed power in was legion but legion had content. Each artifact had a questline with cool new abilities for your class that you looked forward to unlocking, that led to cool skins and a class mount. You had Suramar which was amazing. Regrowing the tree and helping the Nightborne. Helping out the Wretched and doing the solo challenge. The balance of power questlines and the invasions, rep was easier to grind with account wide tokens. You felt compelled to play other content because you wanted those skins.

I felt like i explored all over the broken isles and have fond memories of playing it. Was it the best expansion? No. But compared to BFA my only memory was logging in, grinding chores liek WQs or invasions for visions then logging out because i was bored or run out of time to even consider a raid, a mythic etc. I am not hardcore but i enjoy the game but when i have to do mandatory chores to keep then it puts me off.

I miss just capping, running dungeons or doing pvp without any grinds just to gain access to the basic level of content.

Anyway, I am ranting and way off the monk topic.

I also get where you come from, I too feel BFA was very bland in terms of most content and that the content design has been very lazy but I think that’s mainly to do with resources. You know the small indie company meme? I actually think the dev teams probably have a lot less resources than we can imagine. Board room executive shareholders pressure into tight deadlines and meeting certain targets and a strategy to not spend more money on resources and development. I think Activision’s policy is to invest the least amount of resources as possible into developing their product so they milk out the most possible profits, this of course compromises the quality of the product they deliver and I get that paying customers that were used to a certain standard now complain that those standards are long gone and the product they are being delivered is now sub par, however I still cannot complain about the state of the monk class but could complain about the state of the game as a whole is much worse than how it was years ago, I won’t also deny it could of course be improved but I’m just scared about what way they would go about doing this. The further declining on this game’s quality which has been quite obvious to the eye has been a result of board room executive decision making as such.

This character isn’t going to reach level 60.

I just came back a few weeks before prepatch after barely playing during BfA.

I’m happy with some of the changes, the spec is back to a good flow and plays nicely - but what’s up with WDP sometimes not being useable even though it’s off cd and RSK/FoF are on cd? And why is TP not being copied by my SEF clones?

Was looking through the spell book to see what I’m unlocking while leveling to 60. 10sec cooldown reduction on Flying Serpent Kick and the ToD passive baked into Xuen? Wow, can’t wait until I get those two “new” passives.

Why are my character’s fist weapons still disappearing when using TP? And did they give CJL a normal channel animation instead of the shiny monk one?

TDLR : WW’s got nice flow - but what about the persisting gamebreaking bugs, removed features and lazy lvl50+ passives?

I cant speak for meta or effectiveness. But xuen feels great with ww. The other 2 are kinda pointless imo.

Touch of death, is now there? I honestly much prefered the giant damage window. It was un to try get in as much damage as possible. Good for brew tho.

Im now using brew artifact mog on all 3 monks and its the best thing ever.

Blackout strike > Blackout kick.
This combined with the removal of stagger brew and apinning crane kick being randomly added in I honestly hate brew now. And the returning artifact spell is so lackluster in impact. So dissapointed in brew

TOD was so fun before. You had small window when you had to combine as much damage as you could (Omae wa mou Shindeiru) for delayed high damage hit.

now it’s a 3min cd Shiv with hp% scaling instead of agi% scaling.
again, it’s a Shiv clone that annoys you blinking on every npc interaction in town.

That much to class identity.

Ran a couple of M+ as WW; it went ok. It’s just my offspec and as such I’m not lightning-fingered with it, but I managed to stay more or less on par with other classes, and that’s just fine. My guild’s main-spec WW did cruise to the top of the charts a few times, but he’s been doing that most of BfA despite everyone saying the spec sucks… It is entirely possible to make WW shine, apparently, if you learn it properly.

I agree with others saying ToD cooldown is too long. Only being active below 15% health means you’ll only get to use it once in any given boss fight, where other classes can pack in 2, even 3 of their cooldowns. I’m probably going to end up forgetting I have it at all because on progression fights I’ll go through many many pulls without ever using it.

And never going to say no to another defensive

According to my Details my WDP does about 500k each cast. I spent about a minute on a training dummy and WDP was 97% of my damage. Im not going to complain but this feels a bit broken :joy:

i found the difference in dps rotation and talents between multiple target and single target is waaay too big.

im sorry, but the average player dont have spec for each encounter.
