I don’t think bringing back the Pets is a good idea. It completely devalues their worth from getting them in the past; for being players during those years. Now it’s like “Eh, we don’t care about your early participation anymore; we need them to entice players to keep them subbed.” Instead of you know… making more new pets unique to the anniversary?
Although I shouldn’t be surprised as it’s not exactly uncharacteristic of blizzard to not give a crap about that sort of thing. But I do wish they would someday… there is a lot of value in players obtaining items that are valued highly for their rarity due to how hard they are to get, or that they are no longer available (or both). Kinda a core component of MMOs tbh. But blizzard has never cared for this aspect, and will make ‘rare’ items easier to obtain later down the line to entice players to play.
I’ve always hated them for it. It makes bothering to obtain these time exclusive or hard to get items less worthwhile, to point I barely bother unless it works with a transmog (which is rare…).
Having ‘rare’ items is awesome. Working to get rare items feels pretty dam fulfilling and motivating. WoW lacks this in droves.
They could at least updated the blizzard bear model…
I’m gonna disagree, I’ve played forever so I already have everything. I don’t think old content should be locked in the past unobtainable. I think it was a mistake with the cloak in MOP, by example. The only ones I really think hold some value in the past are actually the original seasonal Gladiator mounts.
Almost everything else, even the seasonal cosmetic PvP armors should be available to those who can earn it. Old special event items should make a return, maybe not like “2007 brewfest stein” but definitely things like seasonal pets/mounts, like the core-hound mount by example.
Let people have opportunities to go out and get this stuff again.
The thing is, this sort of thinking removes the whole aspect of seeing others with some rare item, and being amazed by it, being motivated to try and get something just as rare.
You never get that sense in retail now. The only value in an items is in cosmetics and achievement points. Makes it so much less motivating to bother obtaining things.
You might miss out on stuff, but it’s awesome seeing others with rare items you can’t get, either because it’s content that is too hard for you to do, bad luck, or it just isn’t obtainable anymore. Which may sound weird and completely alien to those who never played before Wrath, but man I miss that feeling.
It made me so motivated to try and obtain those hard to get items, especially if you knew they won’t be obtainable again. And felt awesome when you did. But still, it was awesome seeing other players with them.
I could not care less that someone who wasn’t here earlier is able to get a reward I never used for being here earlier. People caring what other people have is just a bit sad to me.
I’m ok with pets as they have some gameplay value (pet battles).
But I would really like if 4 tabards from Vanilla/TBC era which are unobtainable now will remain unobtainable. Just as a small sign “I was here, before achievments were implemented”.
It is absolutely fine not to have everything. Some things should be rare or limited to people who were there at the time. There is no need to cry when you see someone with a mount / item / pet you cannot get anymore. This wave of “I pay a sub so I should have all the things” is really tiresome now. They should just make you guys a server with an npc that just gives you every item in the game free.
Yeah, I think there is some worth being a participant in something at that specific time and getting rewarded for being there at that time.
Is there any worth in bothering to obtain anniversary items now, if you know they’ll just re-release them later down the line?
Is there any worth grinding out for raid mounts in current content, knowing you can just one man it on god mode an expansion later?
Is there any worth grinding out reputations for those rewards, if you can just wait a patch, not even a expansion, to have a vastly easier time doing the rep grind?
Is there any worth grinding out rare drops and reputation mounts, knowing they’ll just re-release a remix later on where you can just buy those mounts with a currency you get for simply levelling a character up in a day through dungeons where people were one shotting elites?
Is there any worth when the only value these things have is cosmetics and achievements points. I’d say… no.
Something being rare because you logged on once in november is not something that needs to be protected. I got a core-hound mount because I did an LFR version of MC years ago, which representd about an hour or less of my time and zero skill.
That’s why I said about the seasonal gladiator mounts, they were earned and are tied to that season of PvP. But some pet you got for logging in or killing some faceroll world boss 5 years ago? Come on, there is no rarity or value in that. Same goes for the MOP Cloak, they removed it from the game for no reason, they didn’t remove Shadowmourne or Warglaives or Val’anyr, which were actually exclusive during their time, while MOP Cloak everyone had, it was an LFR reward.
