Probably a long shot, but I’ll just go ahead and ask: is there any lore explanation on how priests use shadow magic for harm? At first glance it seems like psychic powers that eventually leave the target comatose or irrecoverably mindbroken, and many of the spells refer to “Psychic” or “Mind”. But then how does it work on enemies that have no biological brain or capacity for fear, such as machines and golems? is that just for game balance, or can spriests also use shadow magic to deal damage more directly? Is there any description of shadow magic being used by a priest in the canon?
Mainly game balance. Mechanical units used to be immune to diseases but when the Death Knight was introduced that was quickly changed.
However, the “shadow” school is very abstract. It’s not as clear cut and easily understood as “fire” and “frost”. Shadow priests do seem to revolve around manipulating the mind and they use the shadow school to do so. Warlocks, however, seem to deal damage directly. Shadow bolt just seems to be a ball of evil magic that deals damage on impact. Could priests use the shadow in this way as well? It’s not beyond belief, but I doubt Blizzard has given it much thought.
Since the Legion shadow priests seemingly moved from “shadow” to Void, whether there is a difference or not - not clear. It should be the same, but sometimes does not look like that.
From Puzzle Box of Yogg-Saron:
All places, all things have souls. All souls can be devoured.
So, it’s not quite the case in WoW universe.
While not the priest, there was an interrogation scene in Shadows Rising where Alleria used Void powers. I do not have the book with me anymore, so can’t give direct quotes.
Somewhat unrelated. Void is not the only thing that causes such effect. Nozdormu got the powers to see through time from Aman’Thul iirc, and it supposedly will drive him mad.
Star Augur Etraeus got the same result. Xal’atath:
Here is one who has caught the merest glimpse of your grim reality. It warped his mind forever.
