Profession "Overhaul" disappointments

I almost didn’t write this post, but I needed to get this down in a coherent form.

The so-called profession overhaul is feeling more and more like a disappointment the more we hear about it.

There are work orders, woo! But only for the handful of Dragonflight crafts. God forbid someone wants to get an item from an old expansion crafted, be it for cross-profession purposes, transmog or whatever other reason. Especially with all the vanilla BoP crafts that you can’t learn due to their differing armour type…

Profession gear slots, and three of them! But again this is just for the latest stuff. Don’t think too hard about your Draenor Mining Pick, Pandaria Mining Pick, Pandaria Gathering Goggles, Pandaria Herbing Gloves, Engineering Mining Helmets and so on and so forth, you’ll still need to carry all of those to swap around if you ever do any gathering in the old content.

Oh, and no transmogging of profession gear, because “there isn’t much variety yet”. That is EXACTLY why we need the option to not show the profession gear, if nothing else (and merge in some of the old profession gear in there - like the fishing hats, mining helmets and the like) - it’s going to feel incredibly immersion breaking to have fifty jewelcrafters coming together from different corners of the world, but they’re all wearing identical aprons and magnifying lenses because that’s the one giving the biggest bonus. Who wants to look individual, ever? I was hopeful when it was first announced that maybe this means we won’t all have to wear the same cooking hat with no option to hide it anytime we want to cook things faster, or the same safari hat if we want more pet xp, or the same two or three almost identical fishing hats that you can’t even hide anymore unless you are a cloth wearer (you used to be able to before the wardrobe system, and then that option got killed off).

I think the main reason that this feels frustrating is that it is part of a long-running pattern, and with no sign that it is even being observed. Customization and immersion options are implemented, but they aren’t thought through or iterated properly.

I think overall, this doesn’t feel like an overhaul if it is only going to affect Dragonflight recipes. By those standards, the star rating recipes in Legion were a major profession overhaul as well.

Ever heard of the phrase “can’t see the forest for the trees”?

I have, but also “the Devil’s in the details”.

I like the sound of everything so far.

I realise it’s all going to feel very different to how it does now.

But I’m going to need to play it to really get a feel for it.

I think if you’re worrying about transmogging the Professions Gear, you are worrying about the wrong things.

Everything you listed is correct and you can be sure that Blizzard is aware. Its just this kind of stuff takes time to develop and time to develop is limited. Retrofit new features lot of time isnt worth development time as it make barely any difference for majority of people. So its better to focus on the new stuff and continiue feature development in the future then spent half of your time to make or bring back something for older older content.

WoW engine is old. It runs on spaghety code. Its way harder to actualy make new features work for old content without spending 90% of your time just fixing bugs.

Yeah, you are very right that this is most likely a scope thing.

It’s just a little disappointing, because the pattern so far isn’t “they go back and sort it later”, it’s that the little things remain broken or wrong forever afterwards.

It just means that I’ll probably avoid some of the new profession stuff, but that seems to be mainly endgame stuff anyway, so.

I’m waiting to try it out, it sounds good but I’m reserving judgement.

I’m kind of glad you don’t need a different mining pick for each expansion that would be awful IMO. We are all different ofc.

I can understand they don’t want to make all expansions work like this until they’ve seen how it goes down with the playerbase and how it all works out in game.

Yeah, I do wish they’d do something about all the mining-picks-per-expansion we already have filling up our bags, though. Make them a toy buff or something…
