So I’ve been wanting to actually go neck deep into professions for a long time and never had, trying to have a set of character’s to cover them all and failing to stick to them.
Now I’ve got my main hunter and I’m doing Herbalism and Inscription (weird choice I know, but it’s due to RP reasons).
Either way, I missed out big time on DF professions and I’m really lost when it comes to the economy - I’ve started wondering, is it even worth having a gathering profession? Should I just buy the mats and have two production ones? Or have two gathering ones to make gold and buy all I need already crafted?
I know bots have been a pain for a long time.
The focus isn’t on making gold, though making my time and gold worth it more is obviously a goal, but I wanted to focus on the “fun” aspect of professions, while also feeling the effort is useful for others and myself, not just spending resources, time gathering and crafting for something no one will want or use.
The real gold is in playing the AH, not so much in professions, and that requires some dedication, properly configured addons like TSM, etc.
For TWW, I just went with Tailoring and Enchanting on my shaman and on my DK. I more or less treat both as gathering professions that don’t require me to fly around and compete with bots.
Cloth reliably drops only for tailors (so it’s a by-product of just playing) and I disenchant stuff I find or make, which feeds tailoring with dust if I do want to make things like bags, spellthreads, etc. Tailoring also has a CD to make high end cloth and Enchanting is useful enough outside of gathering materials too.
I’d have made other choices if I had an “alt army” with professions, but I don’t!
Mats are expensive, you really don’t want to pick up 2 crafting profs, unless you are swimming in gold. And don’t pick up Enchanting right now (like I did on my alt, I think I will drop it for something else because right now it’s worthless to me) - dust is extremely hard to come by and very expensive, so you won’t be enchanting anything soon…
If you are like me and don’t want to become an AH bot with dual crafting professions (for making gold), you can do 2 things:
get 2 gathering proffessions. It’s what I did - while questing you gather herbs, skins, ores to later sell on the AH at the end of your day. Especially now that everyone is levelling professions, your mats will get bought almost instantly. Gives nice almost passive gold income without much hassle. You can always drop one (or both) of these professions later in the expansion when mats are cheaper.
get a matching gathering/crafting prof for your class (like Skinning/Leatherworking for that hunter) - reason being, crafting your own gear is actually good this time around. There are additional optional reagents to each craft that raise the ilvl of the item, but make it soulbound - this is perfect for self-craft and better than what you can get on the AH for that recipe. You can always also make profession tools (with that Leatherworking in my examle) for other professions with extra mats you have - these sell on the AH ; OR just sell the extra mats.
Paring inscription with herbalism is fine if you plan to invest in inscription only. Mats are still very expensive at least on my server. If you want to invest in more professions I would recommend to have a dedicated gatherer with good profession equipment, phials and buffs.
Ive had crafting professions with their matching gathering professions in DF and it was so tedious to level the gathering ones. Took me quite some time to get the knowledge points. Now I just do my routes on my gatherer and the knowledge is done in no time and I can focus the rest of my crafting army to invest in different specialization trees.
Me too, but there are no crafted greens (aside from profession gear, that requires Storm dust to craft in the first place - L-O-L) or BoE greens to disenchant (long gone to AH goblins), so it doesn’t matter.
The only reliable source of greens is items from quests and those are finite. Enchanting is completely broken right now, because some peeps abused AoE farming to get greens early and Blizzard overreacted with the nerfs to drop rates.
The only other way to get dust reliably is from “pity bags” that are weekly, once, it’s just a mess and not worth my time. I’m gonna drop it for Herbing or Skinning, can’t be bothered anymore.
