Professions for a mage

Hi,
I’m new to cata classic - played back in the wow vanilla/TBC days.
Leveling a mage, currently lvl 36. Was thinking about leveling professions while waiting in queue for dungeons. Any suggestions for what a mage should pick up?

I was thinking about tailoring/skinning. Tailoring because you can make gear and skinning for the convenience of making some extra cash, though I’m under the impression that skinning isn’t that lucrative. Not sure how good tailoring is in classic cata either.
Maybe herbalism + mining, but I’m afraid I’m gonna get bored of just wandering around and not killing stuff - plus I don’t get to do any crafting. Maybe a gathering + crafting profession.

Also wondering about secondary professions - are they worth leveling up ?

Tailoring isn’t a bad idea. You might pair it with Enchanting since neither really depends on outside profession. I’d not do Gathering professions. Due to bots raw materials are barely worth anything in a long run really.

I think tailoring is a perfect for a mage because you will be able to make your own armor. And you can make and ride flying carpets.
Enchanting is good because you can disenchant all the unwanted gear.
If you don’t like enchanting then jewelcrafting is also good and will increase the power of your character.
Engineering is also good option and also has few engineer only mounts.

Thanks everyone,
Seems like tailoring + another crafting profession would be the best. Enchanting probably the easiest to pick, just to be able to disenchant stuff?
AFAIK you get some kind of bonus at high level in professions now, does this mean I should level both professions to max? In that case maybe enchanting wouldn’t be the best pick? (many other professions require raw materials so unsure what to pick if not skinning/enchanting)

What about secondary professions - are cooking and fishing worth picking up?

Alright so. Crafting professions are best maxed due to their Unique bonuses being tied to the crafts. Here’s a short summary:

  • Enchanting: Ring Enchants giving +40 to Primary stat of your choice
  • Tailoring: Cloak Enchant that when procced increase your Spirit/Intellect/Attack Power for a short amount of time.
  • Engineering: Add an enchantment on the hands that when activated manually provide a short term Primary Stat buff.
  • Alchemy: Mixology that Improves the effects of Flasks giving +80 to Primary stat with end game flasks
  • Leatherworking - Wrist Enchants having +80 in Primary stat compared to Enchanter’s equivalent
  • Blacksmithing - Ability to make an extra gem Socket in both Gloves and Wrist, atm +80 in Primary stat when used with Primary color Gems. Will get better when we get access to Epic Gems.
  • Inscription - Unique Shoulder Enchantments. Basically +80 to Primary stat comparer to rep ones.
Jewelcrafting - You get to craft and socket up to 3 unique gems adding up to 81 extra points in Primary stat. Will get worse (51 extra) once we get Epic Gems.

Cooking and fishing don’t give unique bonuses like the crafting professions. But they don’t take a profession slot so you can still pick them and level them when you are bored.

What about gathering professions?
I ended up with tailoring and enchanting, since those aren’t directly tied to gathering professions like the others are.

Is cooking and first aid useful for lvl 85 (for a mage)?

Cooking is good if you can get into a guild with the feast recipe.
And buy it from the guild vendor. (Don’t join any that charges gold for it).

And then you should lvl fishing.

First aid is not that great for mages, you rarely use it in combat if at all (maybe in arena).
And outside you make your own food anyway.
