Right, I am driving myself crazy. I have two professions : mining and enchanting. I’m basically in it for the gold and I thought the enchanting could help my alts. I would say compared to many players, I’m still kind of new, still so much I don’t know.
So I don’t know if I have even gone past level one on both my professions … how do I find out? How do I level in mining? Do I just mine and it increases? Because I’ve been doing that for ages, and every time I go to a mining trainer, I am still too low level to learn anything new. I smelt bars and make bars, so I know how to do that. So why am I not Leveling?
Also how do I level in enchanting? By just dienchanting items and enchanting new items?
I’m so confused and frustrated because i have done so much mining and enchanting and I can’t learn anything new from trainers ?? I go to all the trainers I can find.
I look at guides and they all show route for mining nodes, but I’ve been doing that and I don’t know if I’m above level 1. I assume I’m not because I can’t buy to learn anything new.
I’m sorry for the long post, but I am beyond frustrated …
To level up mining you mine and smelt. But if you look at the ore veins, their names will appear in various colors based on your profession level:
Gray - you can mine it but it will not increase your skill level,
Green - you can mine it and it has 25% chance to increase your skill level,
Yellow - you can mine it and it has 75% chance to increase your skill level,
Orange - you can mine it and it will increase your skill level,
Red - your mining is too low to mine it.
The same color coding apply to other professions and smelting and crafting like enchanting. So be sure to focus on things that are orange or yellow if you want to increase profession level. Another thing to remember is the fact that each expansion’s content has it’s own profession skill so if you are above level 60 you need to learn Outland or Northren Mining to skill it up in Outland or Northrend.
To check the level of current variant you press K and check the progress bar. To check the level of lower skill variants you open Minng Skills and there should be Mining with a progress bar from up to 300, you might also have Outland Mining or Northrend Mining if you learned those with their own progress bars. Here’s example of Herbalism:
Just to say nowadays this is no more.
You can learn mining and go straight to mining thorium and truesilver at level 1 but it will yield fewer ore than with appropriate level.
Each of the old expansions has it’s own skill now so you need the right skill for the expansion you are in, the trainers in the zones for each expansion will give you the right training. Enchanting is similar to Mining in this.
Mining, which is the starter world mining
Outland Mining
Northrend Mining
Cataclysm Mining
Pandaria Mining
Legion Mining
Kul Tiran (BfA) Mining

So when I go on my mining tab, at the top it says Cataclysm mining 1 +10/75. Does that mean it’s at level 1? The only option i have for cataclysm mining is smelting Obsidium. Does that mean if I smelt Obsidium that number will go up and then I go back to the trainer and I can learn more thing?
Then I have Northrend mining, when I hover over it it says 17/75. Is that level 17? The only option I have there is smelt cobalt which is highlighted green.
Then when I hover over mining it says 228/300, there are a few options in that list of things to do, the only one highlighted is smelting Thorium In yellow.
Okay great
I guess I will focus on Northrend minkng at the moment.
just so I know I’ve got it right, is the number next to the mining (eg 288/300) my level for that kind of mining ? And I have to mine and smelt the highlighted stuff to increase that?
If it’s 288/300 it’s normal mining from classic content. Northrend Mining goes only up to 75, you should find mining trainer in Northrend to learn it, here’s the list of them:
Don’t fixate too much on smelting. This was mainly a Classic thing. It’s good for some free skill-ups, but the main way to level up mining is to mine nodes.
Oh those professions! I’m glad to see our lovely community was able to clear this up for you, Kalayni! They’ve also linked some fansites with helpful information like Wowhead.com - this is a great resource for exactly these kinds of questions.
I don’t think anyone’s covered Enchanting for you just quite yet, but you’re pretty much spot on - you disenchant any Uncommon to Epic (green, blue or purple) items for specific Enchanting materials that you can in turn use to Enchant armor pieces or weapons for yourself and others. This also follows the same “per-expansion” tiering system as Mining, so you can skip the older tiers unless you really want to complete them. Most of those enchants are also player level- or item level restricted, meaning you can generally only apply them to gear items from that particular expansion tier.
Most popular Prof combo is alchemy+herbs. It’s also stable income but vary price as expansion goes on. Kinda good enough for starters.
