I’ve started playing some arenas again, this time as sub rogue with a fire mage (I know, surprise surprise).
We’ve been struggling against certain match ups, often involving a prot paladin. Back when I took pvp more seriously, prot paladin was not a thing in pvp (legion and the burning crusade), so im a bit confused regarding how to deal with them. Also, I was not playing a rogue back then.
What tips or tricks do you have versus e.g.
prot pala + monk
prot pala + arms warr
prot pala + whatever
I also remember having a prot paladin outheal and outdps a disc priest friend of mine… that in addition to bubbles is making me a bit concerned.
I asked a prot paladin guildie how he got 2.2k rating in 2v2 and 3v3, but he wasnt of much help. His answer:
“I dont know, I am basically just doing my mythic+ rotation in there”
Let me know how you guys deal with prot paladins in arenas. Any tips are appreciated
For prot paladin teams remember - you can have free resets because prot has not dispel.
You can easily force trinkets/bubble in the opener by going paly (you can either db sheep the war or kidney into the poly - beware for Bladestoem.though) - just pop your burst and don’t leave stun gap so pala can’t react.
If you need reset and they bubbled/bopped/Guardians - you can use Shadowy Duel to escape (tip vs pala in general)
If War/monk is running rele, you can kill paladin in the second dr rotation if you are quick about that (blind go on dps and push with combust for a kill on the paladin)
Yeah regarding that… How tf does shadow duel actually work? I mean I know what it is supposed to do, but it seems so buggy. I have experienced so many different scenarios…
Shadowy duel only makes my target invisible for my opponents teammate, but not for my own teammate (best scenario)
Shadowy duel only makes my target invisible for my own teammate, but not for my opponent’s teammate, e.g. a healer. (bad scenario)
Shadowy duel makes everybody invisible to me, but I am not invisible to them. (Absolutely worst scenario)
Shadow duel works the way it is intended to work in accordance to the tooltip.
Most of the time it works as it is supposed to. However, I have experienced all of the above scenarios and worst one being the third one… I just don’t get it lol.
Alright so Shadowy Duel makes your target invisible to EVERYONE but you, and you are invisible to every enemy but your target. Your team can still see you. It means that if you duel someone only you can hit him, only him can hit you, no one can heal him via single target spells, your team can heal you and dispel you.
A few things to know :
AoE effects go through Duel. You, or your enemy, can be healed by Spirit Link, Radiance, etc, can be killed by Meteor, Bladestorm, etc, can ne protected by Power Word: Barrier, etc, or can be CC’ed by Psychic Scream, etc.
no matter whose duel it is EVERYONE INSIDE has truesight. That means your Vanish is useless inside as the person will still see you. Same for them. If you happen to duel a rogue and he makes the mistake of vanishing in a duel you can sap him as you will see him and he will have dropped combat with vanish. Very satisfying.
as I said in a previous post if you duel a target under BoP or Divine Shield, or if they use it mid duel they are still in Duel, but you can no longer see them. They can still see you so beware. It works like this regardless of who used the Duel, and who got BoP’ed. Some people are abusing this and play Sub Ret. The Rogue duels a target, the pala BoPs the Rogue, and the Rogue just kills the guy in the Duel who can’t defend as he can’t see the Rogue. Aside from that abuse it means when a Holy Pala uses his Divine Shield to break your CC and heal his team you can still Duel on Divine Shield to maybe allow your team to kill.
Prot palas are awful to meet in 2v2 as double dps. So many immunities to go through and with their insane healing you can only really get them down in a stun.
On the other hand if you are caught in a stun without a trinket ur dead. Need very good coordination with your teammate to win this one.
Okay so I found a bit of success with this one recently
Assuming you are going the prot to force his cds
drop MfD take deeper strat , if you are NF use the first soul bind (niya is it?)
Your mfd kidney is not really useful anyway in this situation and I’ve found with decent gear that extra 5% plus the mastery on demand with sepsis really gives you some bully power with a standard cheap shot opener . Sap off target assuming not warrior and just open hard pala without shadowblades but with sepsis before eviscerate you will at the very least force some CDs, try to reset with combo points (at least 3 ideally 4-5) , your aim is to get bop/bubble and have a window where you can nuke him without a safety net of these cds
Make second go with shadow blades, shadow strike into a 6 combo kidney on who ever looks the best target with least answers to this -/dance/symbols/dual . Go to town wreck some guy while no one can target you two and for good measure if you feeling bold like you can kill vanish in the dual just to proc MA before last shadowstrike/eviscerate in building combo points. Can confirm hits like a truck and prot paladins with 50k hp melt like butter. Also note- assuming you use premed the vanish in dual will proc it and can be used to force a back to back eviscerate/vanish/shadowstrike/eviscerate because you near always proc combo points off this
