Here’s my take on the current direction i feel the devs want us to go.
Scaling into spellpower with holy shield is fine. I like the idea of being a “hybrid” scaling tank, benefitting from both Spellpower and Attack power. But theres a few core issues we need to address, and a few spells i feel needs to be tweaked in order to work for most paladin players.
Essentially i like that we can choose which stat we want to focus on, to some extent. It can cater to a WOTLK style tank where you focus on melee stats or a TBC style tank where you focus on caster stats, both can work. Here’s a TLDR of what i think about our tanking spells/abilities so far.
Seal of Martyr: Doesnt need to be tweaked. works great for AP focused tanks
Seal of Righteousness: Needs some rework, the seal cant trigger the same stuff that SoM can (Wild stikes for instance). I like that it scales from SP instead of AP and we should focus on that. Maybe attach a rune interaction that gives it the scaling DOT from Seal of Vengeance we had in TBC/Wrath? Something or other
Shield of Righteoussness: Scaling on Bvalue makes sense, i dont think it needs to be tweaked. I want to scale Bvalue for other spells, so it ties in nicely
Hammer of the Righteous: Main breadwinner, really strong scaling with AP and it works great. No need to tweak it imo.
Exorcism: You clearly want us to still use it with multiple rune interactions, and thats fine. Its a nice baseline spell and i enjoy it. It should maybe have some more SP scaling? 42% seems kind of low, but maybe im coping. Im glad that the Exo spam is gone.
Holy shield: This is a hot topic in the LightClub discord. It kinda sucks and kinda doesnt. The scaling is horrible atm. 5% SP? Cmon man, you gotta give it some love. you clearly want us to pick it, with the SP buff, tier set bonus and such. I suggest giving this 30-50% SP scaling per blocked attack. 300 spellpower is to be expected at start of P4 with the runes, and that would give us 90-150 more damage per blocked attack, which scales nicely with threat modifiers.
Consecration: Please give this better scaling. It scales HORRIBLY atm. Imo a TBC scaling of 1:1 over 8 sec is fair. 300 spellpower, 300 more damage over 8 seconds. it just works and it feels good to press in TBC, it does not feel good to press right now.
Avengers shield: This spell is amazing to press but i think it should be added to the Art of War rune. it feels thematically important to prot paladins, but on a 30 sec CD outside of dungeons it wont see much use probably.
Blessing of Sanctuary: You clearly want us to scale block value with holy shield and shield of the righteous, so why not make this blessing strong for us? the damage reduction is neglible, but the damage output is fine. Imo it should give us more Bval based on strength, or a similar sort of scaling, to really make us want to take it.
Judgement: I dont think it needs any changing. I like the seal/judge interaction.
Increasing the scaling on the spells mentioned above would obviously be a buff, so in return you could scale down the damage on Hammer/shield of righteousness. Dont change the scaling, its fine that they benefit from AP, but please give us SP scaling so it makes sense with our kit.
I hope you’ll consider some of these changes and not push paladins into a 11/10/30 spec like we run now and actually be tanks, and not just ret paladins with a shield.
