Prot warrior squishy

Hi guys,

im 380 ilvl on my prot warrior and doing +6/+7 mythics. I love tanking and doing my best to read about tanking etc. Rotation is good.

I hear from healers that im very squishy and that they have hard time keeping me up

anyone else has same issue?
My self healing is crap compared to other tanking class. :frowning:

Absolutely not, Prot warrior is extremely strong offensively and defensively.

Something tells me you misunderstand Prots defensive purpose, as you mentioned poor self healing. Prot is meant to block incoming attacks, using shield block is the main line of defense. Ignore Pain is the second line of defense and helps with the damage smoothing.

Only ignore pain will show on any healing meters. Shield Block is what pushes Prot warrior into god territory as tanks.

Check out the Icy Veins or Wowhead guides for Protection Warrior, I’m sure they can help you out.

Deffo a skill issue and maybe gear. At 390 and fairly knew to war I thought same. 410 now and some practice, oh my days he’s a beast. 20k+ dps, ans tanky as hell.

You are not supposed to self heal, you are supposed to go down super slowly. Thats basically how Prot works. The only main heal you have is victory rush and thats if you get the killing blow and last stand. Its all about them shield blocks, spell reflect and ignore pain in the long run. But no, a war tank isnt about the healing, its about taking as little damage as possible and just go down slowly. If you go without a healer you basically can sustain longer than other tanks without any kind of healing, thats the point of the class.

Warriors have 3 forms of self healing.

Last stand, Rallying cry and Victory rush, never neglect victory rush as it can heal you for quite abit, coupled with traits and Ignore Pain absorbs, you can heal for about 8-12k hps overall in a dungeon, in explosive weeks you might not need healing at all at low leveled dungeons.

As for your Warrior being squishy it all branches to 3 things.

  1. Warriors can’t self sustain a lot, they depend on healers and healers that leave warriors hanging without filling them probably can mean a dead warrior.

  2. The group isn’t supportive enough, a lot of M+ damage a warrior can receive is from magic damage, without interrupts, proper stuns and CCs the Warrior will find them selves 100% > 0% easily, especially at high levels.

  3. You aren’t tanking correctly which is probably the issue here, as 1 and 2 don’t come into factor a lot unless it’s at high M+ in which healers probably know what they are doing and the same goes for dps.

So let’s talk about tanking as a warrior, for starters warriors have a cookie cutter build with no option to pick anything else unless it’s the level 30 or 75 talent rows.

Your talent traits should be like this

15 : Into the Fray : The more allies and friends around you the more haste you have, try to maximize this as much as you can.

30 : Situational : -

  1. Crackling thunder when you need to max range tank and kite a lot.
  2. Bounding stride which is not that good considering you already have good enough utility.
  3. Safeguard which is needed at super high level M+ where you can take 30% of damage off a teammate

45 : Unstoppable force, increase to Thunderclap dmg and reduces it’s cooldown when you use avatar, this means you’ll Clap > Ability > clap > ability > clap > ability during Avatar.

60 : Bolster, reduces Last stand’s CD and causes you to block ALL melee attacks.

75: Situational : -

  1. Menance : not that good
  2. Rumbling Earth : Reduces shockwave cooldown when you hit 3 or more targets, you want this when you don’t have a lot of stuns.
  3. Stormbolt : 4 seconds single target stun, very useful when you got a lot of stuns and you need something extra to stun a priority target.

90 : Booming voice : Demo shout gives 40 rage and increases your damage to affected targets by 15%

100 : Anger management : Causes rage spent to reduce cooldowns.

Now let’s talk about the actual tanking.

Warrior by itself is super squishy, 1 mistake and you go 100% > near 0% easily this happens to warriors a lot when they don’t watch out at skill gaps that will happen if they don’t play their rotations right, or when they use everything up due to heavy damage, then you need to ask for a cooldown from your healer or kite.

How to actually tank you need to keep in mind these things :-

  1. Avatar with 3x Bastion of might is a huge Offensive AND defensive cooldown it also pops Ignore pain so you never Use Avatar + IP asap, you will save that rage or dump it on shield block / revege.

  2. Demo shout has very low cooldown and is a very good defensive and offensive cooldown, you need 1x clap trait to elongate it by 6 seconds which grants very high uptime on it.

  3. Never go into a fight with 0 rage, you might die mid charge or lose a huge portion of your hp

  4. You can stay at very high rage levels before any fight by intercepting your friends and using thunder clap for 5 rage

  5. Always charge in with a shield block and if you can IP up.

  6. Always use intercept on teammates in melee range for extra rage generation, however keep in mind not to accidently give mobs your back and make sure to have a stack for when you need it to kite.

  7. Last stand with bolster makes you block all melee attacks, so never ever use shield block with it, you usually use last stand when you can’t use shield block anymore and are about to get a huge boss hit or have a lot of targets on you that will kill you if you don’t shield block.

  8. Don’t be stingy with your cooldowns, they come back fairly fast, however don’t spend them all together, the objective is to take the least amount of damage and there’s no need to combine a lot of defensives to survive a small period then just keel over, you try to shuffle between them as much as you can, also demo shout should most of the time be on cooldown unless very rare situations where mob’s about to die, fight is too short ( less than 5 sec )

  9. Some mobs have no melee damage!!! know them! on the top of my head Zul, third boss motherload, the masterminds in motherload all have no physical damage, just magic damage so u never use shield block on them only IP.

  10. You want to gain and dump rage as much as you can! to get the most CDR! but don’t dump stupidly, and also don’t dump slowly.

  11. Shield slam generates 15 rage! don’t underestimate that, however also don’t underestimate revenge, it’s insane dps and leaves deep wounds on enemies and is most of the time procs ( there’s a proc that makes it free to use! )

  12. Always use intimidating shout to interrupt abilities at the last 0.1 sec of the cast, it’s 1.5 min cooldown but can save you a lot of damage.

  13. There’s most of the time room to LoS casts that deal a huge amount of magic damage, use them! especially in Tol’daggor corridors, u peak get the cast on u and at last second hide behind the side beams.

  14. Spell reflect is important! use it, and use it wisely! a lot of the time mobs cast as soon as you enter the fight, tell your group not to interrupt that and reflect it, spell reflect also gives you 20% magic damage reduction so even if you can’t reflect something use that!

  15. Rallying Cry is a 15% Heal for you AND your team, keep an eye on yourself and your team at 415 ilvl it heals me for about 80k or more, the heal can be increased if you already used last stand!

  16. Always get a healthstone from the proving grounds before you join and dungeon, 3x times in a dungeon for a 25% heal is insane.

  17. Shield wall is 40% flat damage reduction! you don’t need to use a lot of other cooldowns with it, generally a shield wall + IP + demo is enough, you can let your shield block cooldown during it.

  18. If mobs aren’t that much and your about to go into a new fight and you have avatar up, you don’t really need to shield block, save it for the next fight unless you already have a stack up.

19 ) Know when you are going to have downtime on your shield block, in that downtime kite! you often need to kite for about 3+ seconds to wait Shield block to come back, however don’t kite far or mobs will start hitting your team.

  1. Try to snipe kills with your thunderclap to self heal with Victory rush!

  2. Know each mob and boss perfectly so you can know how to deal with them easily! A simple example is Waycrest manor’s 4th boss lord and lady waycrest, the wasting strike from lord way crest deals a huge amount of damage but can be reflected! reflect the first wasting strike, and when he casts the 2nd one, charge to a faraway team mate, this will cause him to reset cast, then leap away or charge another faraway team mate, then you can reflect, this way you will never get a wasting strike on you! you literally reduced damage taken by 70% just by knowing how to deal with this ability! there are a lot of tricks out there like this, some are documented, some are not and you just learn them by using your mind :stuck_out_tongue:

  3. Heroic throw generates ALOT of threat.

As for the rotation it self it’s fairly simple yet deep enough.

You have Six active abilities

Ignore pain and Shield block, which are Off GCD abilities, you always wanna keep these up, keep in mind you can’t Stack IP like you used to in legion, so you only wanna refresh it when it’s about to go off or it’s value has gotten too low.

Keep in mind you generally wanna have both Shield block and Ignore pain when a mob or boss use a " Tank Alert " type of ability, these abilities are usually denoted in the dungeon journal and for the mobs you have to look for mob guides or just intuitively know them, you can also use Method Dungeon Tools and see each mobs abilities and understand which them is the " Tank Alert " ability.

Then you have Thunderclap, devastate, Revenge and Shield slam.

You generally wanna use thunderclap on CD all the time, the only time you don’t is when you don’t have avatar and wanna get rage via shield slam, or when you wanna apply deepwounds via revenge.

Shield slam is a cool ability, it deals huge single target damage and generates 15 rage, which is a huge sum! it also has a 30% chance to reset when you clap, revenge or devastate, you generally wanna use it on single target when thunderclap is on cd.

Revenge is a very strong ability, it requires good positioning and applies deepwounds to enemies increasing your damage a lot! it becomes free to use when you parry or dodge which happens a lot, you generally wanna use this when thunderclap is on cd and there are a lot of targets to hit and you are not in trouble rage wise, defensive wise.

Devestate is an ability you will use rarely, you only use this when shield slam, revenge and thunderclap are on cooldown or when you can’t afford to use revenge and all other abilities are on cooldown.
