Protection paladin AoE

Is it just me, or we dont have much AoE? like if I gather 5 mobs, the AoE dmg is really low… only the single target is high…(I mean like generating threat to all of them)

Okay no? It’s really fine. What covenant are you running, what talents?

Compared to Veng DH, and other tanks, we are somewhat limited yes. You will need the SOTR legendary to do decent AOE damage, and talented into 1st avenger.

We used to be much better in previous expansions. I dont like the changes they made in Shadowlands, it limits us a lot compared to what we were.

I feel that Paladins got abit overnerfed based on what Paladins with the Legendary/Conduit was able to do on beta. Both HoTR and Consecration scales horribly and unless your Kyrian you got no solid way of getting good threat stright away and at the same time be able to get a SoTR off for mitigation.

Right now DH is doing like 10 globals of damage with just their Kyrian ability and everything else in their kit is also AoE. There are no competition and it hurts us when looking for m+ groups.

I think Blizzard should up the Consecration damage from 5% to 10% since Cons just scales insanly badly and I think that the first SoTR each fight should be free. And since they insist on having things that require us to be in Consecration, they should just make it so the Consecration moves with the Paladin instead of being static, because its so small and m+ and the damage output is designed so we need to kite.

I wouldnt mind if they boosted the AoE damage on HoTR aswell.

We have been put us in a weird situation this expansion and I personally do not like it. At the same time, I do not think they will change much for our spec, given how little they have changed/buffed us in the last few years. As long as we are “middle of the pack” spec, Blizzard don’t touch protection paladin. We would have to go down to protection warrior level for them to buff us in some way.

They haven’t done the balancing of tanks correctly and they messed around Prot paladin talents too much and they removed last Defender talent on last tier which was essential for AOE damage, and tankiness. Overall, we got nerfed not only on damage and SORT, but the whole spec over all.

On the contrary, I find Paladins to have perfectly serviceable AoE compared to, say, Prot Warriors (ironically), because while they certainly can spam Thunderclap (and revenge to some degree), they hit like piss compared to BFA Prot Warrior, which was dominating the damage charts. Even back then, Paladins would pump out very respectable DPS provided the packs were large enough, and still do after the rework.

Personally, I’m using the Holy Avenger’s Engraved Sigil legendary (35% chance for the cooldown to reset on use) and have had moments of up to 10x Shield throws back-to-back, which will pump out some nice damage even without First Avenger (+2 extra targets). I personally prefer more Judgements as that is far superior for ST, despite using an AShield legendary, but the swaps in content make it OK. Example, heading to Mythic plus, AShield talent is far better by default.

The only issue I have is the AoE tie to RNG. You have a 15% chance of proccing GC (reset) when using HOTR or avoiding a melee attack, so your best bet is to have lots of enemies hitting you at once. When you’re able to do so, the procs are insane, but prone to dry spells in regular fights and especially single-target. Even the legendary itself (35% chance to reset on use) is the same deal, and only becomes consistent when in a bigger position to acquire resets (lots of enemies on you).

At the same time, the scenario giving you more chance for resets is the exact scenario that provides them and results in higher damage output as a result.

As a Venthyr Paladin myself, I’m chucking out absolutely disgusting windows of AoE DPS that can put actual DPS to shame. Even without Hallow, any moment where you’re safe to pull plenty of enemies results in respectable damage. It just sucks how it can rely on RNG so heavily compared to Prot Warriors, who don’t hit as hard as they used to, but at least hit regularly and consistently with Thunderclap peppered with Revenge whenever rage allows it.

As a prot main? Please tell me that’s an off spec ?

Also PSA prot aoe is bonkers. I’ve had keys where I out DPS the DPS on trash.

I think perspective is important if the trash melts in a Few seconds then ofc the aoe is going to be a bit low on the paladin you are still building . But if it’s alive for a while you will see that prot aoe is consistent where other classes are not so much.

Also divine toll on every pack with sotr leggo is such fun

Your AoE dps without Hallow isnt great, Consecration is like 5% of attack power and 8% from HoTR add another 52% attack power damage and you got your first 3 globals.

While DH with their first global leaps in and put down an attack that does 350% attack power in damage. And still have alot of AoE attached to the rest of their kit aswell outside of those abilities Judgment/HoW is just single target. So yes we can do nice damage single target but our AoE damage if not popping Ashen Hallow is really low compared to other tanks and it scales even worse.

The burst AoE of other tanks on a pull to pull basis is higher, Venthyr does indeed however do pretty good burst when we pop Ashen Hallow but if we’re talking like m+ Venthyr doesnt come close to Kyrian, Divine Toll acutally gives you a really good insta threat tool and is also the main reason Paladins was nerfed when looking at damage during beta.
