So this expansion i decided to roll tank. Ive played the tank role for 2 seasons throughout my entire wow life (played since early tbc)
I decided on paladin as my main, as ive never really tanked on that class before. And my goal was to just push as high as possible through only pugging.
I have so far reached 3100 io. And i felt like things were going great, and i wasnt that bad a player. But then a few bad runs happened where i messed up a few times, depleting the key. Which ive gotten a lot of flak for.
My question is: is it even possible to get title from purely pugging? What are your experiences? I felt like it was an achievable goal, but after the recent pretty hardcore comments ive gotten. Im thinking maybe i was just getting carried and im not skilled enough to go any further, or its completely impossible with a non coordinated group
You gotta make yourself known to the top as a good player so theyâll invite you. Otherwise, no.
The playerbase shrinks so much as you go higher that you start recognizing people you run into that I donât know if you can even call it pugging at that point due to how few players there are, youâll run into them so frequently.
Itâs fully doable, but what happens is the player pool shrinks and people start recognising you so you end up in more of an ad hoc mythic+ community than strictly playing with strangers every single run.
I was a Shadow Priest and still am. Season 1 was the season I actively tried hardest and spent the most time playing, I ended close to 3500 which was a full 150 points above title.
S2 Shadow was extremely meta and title was signficiantly easier due to that.
S4 Was the hardest by far due to the higher barrier caused by lower low end participation.
You have to enjoy doing mythic+ as an activity because you will be doing keys youâve already timed if not to practice then to build rapport / become memorable for other players. In DF S1 I was pugging but I had maybe 6 tanks who knew me I was actively playing with, then another 10-12 healers and dps weâd grab whatever seemed good or Iâd get an invite if they had a spot and were already going.
Technically it is possible, I know some streamers who only pug and got the title pretty much every season, but youâre gonna have to play 10h+ a day and thatâs not possible for everyone.
Tank messups are far more visible than those of dps so its easier to point the finger at them and say âyou screwed upâ.
If you got to 3100 youre clearly a good player. Its up to you to decide if you think if youre good enough to push for the title (and to put up with the setbacks that come along with that - people being douches as a case in point).
Do you think youâre close to plateauing or do you think there is a decent amount of room for you to climb still?
Do you want to put up with the finger pointing / (strip away them being douches and trying to be objective are you in over your head?)
Only you can really answer these honestly. Iâm not good enough for the title and donât care to try to be (I wonât beâŚ) but regardless there comes a stage where M+ starts to feel too much like a job and less like fun. Have you reached that stage?
Its also very hard for a tank to mess up in lower keys due to the nature of the role, the learning curve to tank higher keys is usually quite steep because you all of a sudden have to start caring about how and when you use your mitigation instead of just being practically immortal until someone else messes up.
Agreed, I feel compelled to point out that whats high for me is probably a warm up for you though.
On topic, Yoda streams and its very clear he has a CD plan for every event on a boss. Youâll also need that (broadly) for trash, as a tank you need to understand what youâll have going into the pull and what youâre team will likely have too. No point in trying a monster pull if the team have just pressed all their buttons on the last pull (stating the obvious but puglife - esp no comms makes that harder).
I mean according to Rio atm the title is around 3.2k, if you got to 3.1 with this being your second tank season ever IMO you can definitely try take your title.
But only you can decide if it is worth it and if you have the time to keep committing to it.
Strictly pugging no. Its not possible, even with a âmeta specâ.
The reason is simple: At those levels its not just your own personal skill, its the teamâs skill as a whole that matter. So you need extra coordination across all levels.
And because its so hard. And because you need all that extra coordination⌠1 small mistake from 1 person literally means a deplete. If it was a 10, pushing that depleted 9 back to a 10 is no big deal. But pushing a depleted 15 back to a 16 is a LOT of work, and risk.
So people at those levels wont just invite anyone. In fact, they wont even post their key in the LFG tool. You only get invites to those groups by whisper. So someone must know you, and be willing to invite you to their group (and probably their Discord too).
And that is why the 0.1% title is impossible to pug.
If you got to 3100 rio you absolutely got what it takes from a skill perspective to go even further. The reason why you feel that way is probably because you need extra coordination with your teamates to survive certain things. Like asking PS from the DPriest in critical moments.
But the real question would be Is it optimal? And the answer is No.
You could run an M0 with 5 Hunters. Would it be possible to complete, perhaps with enough gear and some canny use of abilities.
But itâs not an optimal way to do it.
And by Optimal Iâm not talking about Ultra Min/Maxing to the Nth degree with FOTM Meta.
Simply reasonable measure to ensure your best chance. You gem and enchant your gear. You use potions and flasks. That kind of optimal.
Thanks everyone for the insight!
I think im gonna give it a go, to say ive at least tried. Ive been climbing 50-100 io pr week so far. Im gonna keep going untill i hit a hard stalemate. And then hopefully make a few friendships along the way!
Though a lot of people just do the key and leave. I dont feel like people are too talkative
Thereâs a threshold you reach where everyone youâre playing with has been around the block a few times and knows the only way to move forward is to cultivate relationships.
Below that itâs a bit of a wilderness, but once you get there itâs like sticking your head above the clouds.
This season? i donât think so
In DF i think you could do it cause game was more PUG friendly
Changes made to m+ in TWW made it pretty HARD maybe impossible to get it
TLDR: Yes, you can, quite a few does. In my guild alone there are two people who every season make it a thing to PuG title. Why? No clue, but they enjoy the challenge.
Personally, just keep adding people who you enjoy and vibe with in a key. Then if they donât work out long-term just remove them. Cycle this over and over, and you will build a network of people you enjoy playing with. Then actively work with them, or simply use the friend tag (blue text) to increase your chances to get invited to their groups.
Fun thing, I got people on my friendslist I havenât talked to in years. But if I (or they to me) que up, I am extremely likely to get invited. A simple âhelloâ and âhiâ is exchanged and a key completed, then a âgg hfâ. It is a really great kind of WoW player relationship. 10/10 will recommend.
This is still basically PuG+, you are not premade, you just got a roster of people to get keys started and laying the groundwork of creating a well oiled pushing machine if you ever decide to take that next step.
