Purpose of moonkin form?

Hi all,

I’ve recently just started WoW and firstly, I’m loving it. I decided to go with Druid as it just seems to be the coolest to me, including lore wise. But I’m struggling to see many of the Druids in game use this moonkin form? It seems most don’t? So I guess that’s my first discrepancy. I really enjoy the whole role-playing feeling of WoW so far, but I can’t find much on why our player uses the form but many other Druids don’t. It kind of spoils the role-playing for me.

My second is, as far as I can tell so far, the moonkin form seems to be a mechanic in which we ensure its up at all times simply for damage and defense buffs? I noticed all healing spells aside from regrowth kick us out of it, is this intentional by design? Cause I’d imagine without this, the form would be kind of a redundant addition?

I appreciate all help in advance, and glad to be apart of the Druids :stuck_out_tongue:

You are playing in boomkin form if you play balance at all times unless you go cat for movement or something and yes heals that boomie gains from resto affinity will take you out of form. I use glyph of stars so if i ever play boomie im still my character just in a blue astral form.
You cant use your main dps spells out of form so you want to be in it when dpsing.

Moonkin is an outdated meme that should be available via glyph only, not as a default form.
Not many balance druids ask for a whole new different form, and i know that many just want a little customization like antlers and wings like malfurion.

I’m playing Balance and I can defo tell you that I’m not in Moonking form all the time. Precisely bc of what you said: I sometimes have to heal or use spells that remove it. I just switch back to Moonkin afterwards. When doing dmg you want it up all the time tho bc of the constant dmg buff.

Also, not sure if this is obvious or not, but there’s a glyph that removes the Owl form. I personally hate that form and use the glyph that preserves my human (well, night elf) form even in Moonkin. Maybe the glyph can be another reason you don’t see many owls around?

Travel is another thing, e.g. in cities where you need to move around a lot between portals, AHs, vendors, etc. it’s more convenient to just stay in travel form all the time, and when that breaks you shift to your human form by default.

Moonkin Form is something that Balance Druids have by default and other Druid specs can pick up if they chose Balance Affinity. The Affinity talents basically give you a minor ‘off spec’ in homage to how Druids have normally been a jack of all trades class.

Moonkin Form increases your armour by a fair bit, and increases spell damage by 10% (for Balance spec only that part I think). It may do more, I honestly forget since it’s been changed so much over the years. Basically if you are doing spell damage, you should normally be in Moonkin Form.

There is a glyph called Glyph of Stars which causes your Moonkin Form to become Astral Form. Functionally the same, but instead of turning you into a Moonkin it turns you into a blue hued version of yourself.

I sometimes don’t bother going into Moonkin Form if I’m doing easier content as it’s an extra button press I sometimes can’t be bothered with.

And yes, casting any healing spell aside from Regrowth kicks you out of Moonkin Form. This is intentional. You’re not supposed to be healing as a Balance Druid. Sure during solo content and PvP you will be healing, but it’s not your main purpose in a group.
