PvP should be about skills, not gear

Just sharing my experience of losing a bg because the opposite team had a warrior that could annihilate 10 people all on his own. He started farming us at the graveyard (like literally on top of the graveyard, that’s how bold he was), and when 10 of us would spawn, he would kill all 10 of us and still be ready to take on another 10, 30 seconds later. What’s the point of that? Am I supposed to devote my whole life to WoW to get some enjoyment out of PvP? We all pay the same amount of money for the subscription, so PvP should be enjoyable for all. Confine gear-grinding to PvE, or at the very least narrow the gap between those who have good gear and those who don’t, so that skill trumps gear and not the other way around.

If I spend weeks gearing up my character, why should I not crush those that did not?

Go play a moba or fps if you want that stuff. We had templates during Legion and it did not work.

If you remove gear from the equation you still will have a huge balance problem between classes and speccs.

If I’m a better player than you, then why should you be allowed to crush me because you grinded like a mindless ghoul?

Because I put in the work to get the gear to crush you. That simple.

Whole point of the game is to get gear and grow stronger.

As far as i remember pve-pvp other than the skill was also gear-related.

Yep that’s the card.

So someone that spend 10 x times more time , having min-max everything shouldn’t have a + over the other that …just hit a lvl enter a bg an want to be gods~

Login from a second account D: lol

Gear should matter.
But the gear gap should not be ridiculously huge. A full conquest geared player should have an advantage against a full honour geared player, not be an unstoppable god.
Blizzard always messes this up.
If you’re a more casual player wow pvp is only playable at the start of the first season when everyone is starting at the same level and conquest is capped each weak.
Also sometimes during the very last expansion when gear catch up is completely wack.
If you can’t deal with being completely grinded for weeks until you also have full conquest gear I really don’t recommend wow pvp. It’s horrible.

This is the kind of people you get with an MMORPG. Without people or things they could overpower with gear and make up for their skill it wouldn’t be enough for them and they’d rage quit the game.

If they had BG’s where everyone had default gear, no extra nothing, not even enchants, a lot of these guys would absolutely loathe it.

Didn’t they try that in legion with templates and stuff? And people where complaining that they can’t “customize” their characters or something.

It was like that in Legion with the templates, but people were correctly against it as gear should to matter in an mmorpg.

That’s the point.
Like one Max-geared player should be able to fight and win (if lucky) two middle-geared with the same level of personal skill.
But if the gap is more – game rolling to the mud for the vast majority of players. Like it is at the moment.

Yes.
It was terrible and at the same time, accidentally amazing.
They effectively made customization pointless by locking every stat to a set value and increasing them based on your ilvl.
It didn’t matter what gear you had, only the ilvl.
You had zero choice in stats customization. Blizz decided that for you.

But either by choice or pure dumb luck, they’ve kept the stats increase very low with only something like a 1% increase for every 10ilvl which meant that everyone was very close to each other when it came to gear. At most you had something like a 20% difference. This made Legion pvp probably the most casual, gear balanced and enjoyable it has ever been imo.
I hated that I couldn’t customize my secondary stats but I don’t think I ever had as fun in pvp in any expansion as in Legion. I wasn’t limited to my best geared one and I didn’t have to suffer through weeks of getting corpse-camped just to be able to play the game.

I think that’s a horrible design choice and is what’s holding pvp back from being anything but niche content that is only ever really enjoyed by the most dedicated and hardcore of players.
Most that get absolutely obliterated in pvp does not obtain any enjoyment from that or feel inspired to suffer it through. They simply stop playing pvp.
Blizzard have designed a game system that actively pushes players (especially new players) away from it and then they wonder why so few enjoy it.
At very, very least they should have gear scaling in normal bgs.
Having max geared players steamroll everything in the most entry level of pvp, is the single dumbest design Blizzard have in the entire game.
It’s like having mythic raid bosses in normal dungeons or putting enemy faction guards in the starting area.
If they said that their goal was to minimize the amount of players playing pvp then I would believe them because that is exactly what they’re doing.

I get that you don’t have early access and try to play battleground at the end of an expansion.

End of season is the worst time to start pvp with a main character. You’ll encounter a lot of fully geared people that pass time until next season start.

This is RPG game.
Gear should matter.
If you want skill required games then go CS or for Honor where you can beat your enemy with your skills.

Frizzle’s post a few posts above said everything needed to be said. To add to that with my suggestion as usual (after all, forums exist to make suggestions), I’d make it so that:

  • Conquest equipment is at highest ilvl
  • Upgraded overworld PvP gear goes to -3 ilvl from Conquest
  • Honor gear goes to -6 ilvl from Conquest
  • Overworld PvP gear goes to -9 ilvl from Conquest
  • Epic gear from any PvE source, including crafting, goes to -13ilvl from Conquest
  • Rare gear from any PvE source, including crafting, goes to -16ilvl from Conquest
  • Uncommon gear from any PvE source, including crafting, goes to -19ilvl from Conquest
  • Common and trash-tier gear stays as they are

I hope I didn’t forget any.

So the differences would still exist, but they would be much closer than what they currently are. This would effectively downplay the effect of gear for PvP, but it would still exist.

They did and people didn’t like it because Blizzard forced you into specific playstyles. Want to go mastery heavy because of X? Sorry, you cant because Blizzard doesn’t want to, so you go haste instead (as an example). You still had an advantage through gear by like 7 or 10% compared to people in bad gear.

People werent as much against the template system but more about how blizzard implemented it and forced them into specific playstyles which people don’t tend to like (ashran in WoW was a prime example. Got changed so often and the community quite literally gave Blizzard the middle finger and refused to play it like Blizzard wanted)

I was mostly PVP player for years and dropped it completely in the DF.
And you know, I am enjoyed the game much more after that, spending time on Soup event instead BG.

On one hand, I agree. On the other hand, for random and epic bgs, being in greens is not that bad. And if your team wins you still get conquest which is the goal, to farm it, which to be honest is quite quick, so i think this debate is pointless…

The only thing here they should introduce is a catch up mechanic so you get less restrictions on weekly conquest the later it goes into the season. The problem is not the gear difference. Or how to get conquest. Getting conquest is very easy. The problem is how long it takes with the weekly lock out, so if you are a new player it can lead you to stop pvping as you can’t be arsed to wait that long.

Same, pretty much.
Last three expansions I haven’t done anywhere near as much pvp as I used to and mostly been doing pve stuff in classic modes.
Gonna give it a another go in TWW though. I like some pvp changes they’ve made… On paper at least ^^
