Questing DPS shadow vs. disc vs. holy these days?

How distinct is the DPS difference when leveling with quests between those specs?

(I don’t like Shadow, but if it is worth it, I might consider it.)

Shadow’s easier to level with fast if you’re comfortable with it, if you aren’t then it can be a lot riskier and probably about the same pace as disc if you’re just taking it slow.

Plodding along I’d say disc is the best balance between kill speed, general ease, and minimal risk if you do end up biting off more than you can chew.

Thanks. I did get the impression that self-healing might be riskier for spriest than for warlocks … maybe a bit like it used to be for warlocks.

And the desire to level fast can of course tempt to pull large groups, which DPS can nuke down quick but also can get nuked down quick. (I think some people actually quest as tank for that reason where the class allows it. They just pull everything in sight and that turns out quite quick, too. … Probably a great joy with a DH.)

Holy not feasible? Holy Nova only good for weaksauce trash? I like how it is doing damage and self-heal at the same time.
I also noticed with some healer classes how their damage spells tend to have even higher base damage than DPS, and sometimes don’t even have limited resources.

UPDATE: I just did some newbie single target dummy tests and got ~420 DPS on disc, ~470 on holy and ~520 on shadow! All using the basic rotation and cooldowns whenever available.
I guess shadow will really lead in the AoE / multi-target department. But my tests showed, not extremely more compared to holy nova spam.

UPDATE 2: I started questing and have to say, the XP buff helps making it enjoyable in any spec. But coming from druid, I cannot get comfortable with disc’s and shadow’s strange ways of self-healing, and I find holy nova more convenient than that channeled shadow multi-target. I can use a HoT in the beginning and then a usually insta-procced flash heal in the end. Juggling large crowds is probably still only really fun for tanks.

You guys are just overthinking it. Just level up as shadow its way faster and way more handy, convenient than healer spec for questing. This question pops up very frequently and yes…youre immortal as disc but i do feel like thats the case for sp too and killing mobs one by one gets old very quickly.
Only thing thats better to be healer for, is dungeons since you get faster q. And all you need for shadow is available at level 28.
After you get you hands at misery talent both healers specs falls of the competition. Just my two cents.

I’ve heard from a lot of people levelling priest for the first time, especially without a full set of looms, that shadow isn’t comfortable to level as if you aren’t familiar with how it plays and trying to maintain voidform between mobs / mass pulling.

Then again, for a new players or priest newcomers, thats the case for every priest spec imo.
Disc is absolutely fine at the start for couple of levels, but the it starts to slow down rapidly with higher levels and stuff gets way more anoying.
In my opinion those question about what spec to level up, are coming more from a players that just dont like shadow, or dont wanna play it and would rather heal. They wanna know if it isnt waste of time to level as healer and if its effective. And for those i would advice to level in what spec you like and have the most fun with. They are all viable to level all the way. But healer specs imo are only effective if you spam dungeons, for questing is shadow just superior.

Ive leveled up 6 priests and tries both ways and shadow is just quicker in open world but it has longer ques for dungeon. And maybe yes the fact that i do have looms and bit of a clue helps that alot, but priest isnt realy that hard to learn atleast for leveling. Its just abou personal preferences. I personaly cannot stand healing low level dungeons while leveling, it puts you into sleep.

After trying to get into it, I can confirm - and this is probably intended style of the spec - ‘dancing at the edge of madness’ - that it is a stressful experience.
I’ve been leveling my priest from 83 to 97 yesterday, as holy, and can’t complain. I also tried disc but somehow couldn’t get higher DPS with that than with holy.
