Question about Blood elf and shadow magic

Afraid not. You’d imagine the more savvy or magically capable would have figured something was up but the vast majority of the blood elven population had no idea what was powering the burning crystals. Draining the mana out of living creatures is its own separate thing.

and here I was thinking elves were intelligent :tipping_hand_woman:  alright then, but just curious, is it a fact that’s been stated somewhere?

I believe it’s mentioned in Chronicles Volume III.

If I remember correctly it’s also in the Warcraft Encyclopedia, where it notes that the Blood Elves on Azeroth would have been horrified by Kael’thas’ dealings with the likes of Illidan.

Personally, I don’t think it’s a big stretch that the average elven commoner wasn’t aware of the specifics of the burning crystals. They’re magical batteries that were making the city function again, best to not question a good thing - and also it was a totalitarian police state, questioning things wasn’t a good idea.

People who asked too many questions were forcefully re-educated by shadow priests in Kael’thas’s era.

Thanks! Still haven’t read the chronicles, it’s something I feel I should :relieved:

I headcanon it as being heavily restricted and forbidden within Silvermoon’s walls. But allowed in moderation in Quel’thalas proper.

Or that’s how I play this character anyway. Law-abiding shadow user.

That… seems incredibly problematic to my mind, but thank you for clarifying anyway. TIL.

Since no one has provided the source so far, here’s a link. Literally says “Shadow (Void)”.
