Question about Blood elf and shadow magic

So, since Umbric and his group was exiled for studying the Void and it’s powers, what is the stance among the Blood elves on Shadow priests, are they allowed? Now I plan on being a healer IC on this one but, still wondering :woman_shrugging:

I imagine since the Sunwell was renewed that the state (Rommath in particular) is very protective, and Chronicles lists shadow in the same group as void. That it is likely a big no-no.

Warlocks use shadow magic too, and they have not been exiled or outlawed to my knowledge. Thus I suspect shadow magic is regarded as a diluted branch of the Void; low-calorie Void if you will. Something so relatively harmless that it never warranted restriction the way Umbric’s research did.

Alternatively it’s one gaping oversight.

It’s likely to be this.

They were banished from Silvermoon, not Quel’thalas, as far as I know. I can understand why you wouldn’t want Void magic near the Sunwell.

Chronicles, and dev tweets to clarify the contents, state that Void and Shadow are interchangeable terms for the same thing. I felt the need to point this out, because it’s an important retcon.

Grand Magister Rommath says: This is why I demanded that Umbric and his radicals be exiled. Anyone who treats with the Void is a danger to the Sunwell!

Is the direct quote regarding Umbric’s banishment. Specifically, we’re only told that he and his followers were exiled - no other void user is stated as being such, but the sentiment behind the exile is obvious. I think it’s fair to say that Umbric’s lot were exiled from Quel’thalas and not just Silvermoon, however, given the fact it was super hard to track them down and they were in hiding. If they were allowed to do their thing, but away from the city, then there shouldn’t have been a need to hide like that.

Whether or not void users are welcome in Silvermoon, though… Who knows?

I feel like when you exile someone you escort them out of the whole kingdom. Umbric seems to just… go to the Ghostlands. Did no one follow him to kick him out or what?

The Ghostlands aren’t fully under elven control, even today.

But he still walked out of Silvermoon despite being exiled. Surely they wouldn’t just give him a pat at the gates and say " You can find your way out, exit Quel’Thalas pretty please "

Think he’s pretty occupied right now…

Oh man, luckily he didn’t answer otherwise we’d have to weed through zillions upon trillions lines of text for a simply yes/no answer xD

I think their dabbling in the Void was opening (or at the time, trying to open) rifts to the Void itself, and that’s why it was a danger.

Shadow/Void magic by itself is probably not the danger, but rift openings to the Void itself and stuff? Yeah, I can see why that might screw things up.

The Mage class hall has a whole thing about Shadow magic being dangerous/bad too. My impression is research into it is generally forbidden, unless you have special permission. I could see Warlocks and Shadow Priests having such permission, especially if they are high enough in rank.

Lots of answers, thank you! As usual Blizzard leaves us with some gaps, but you could say it’d be best to not start casting Void magic in Silvermoon to stay on the safe side

Hello it is me, the Void Elf Person:tm:.

Umbric’s group was most likely exiled because he was a magister, and they were not secretive at all- meaning, it was RIGHT in Rommath’s face. While Silvermoon is outdated, there is a magister npc using Void on protesters, which means it either used to be fine-ish to use or it’s ‘technically illegal but only if you get caught by the right people’, so to speak.

It’s very heavily implied that Umbric’s people didn’t even use the Void at all before they went into the Rift, too.

On top of that, warlock magisters are a thing- warlocks typically don’t only use Fel.

I’d say to feel free to play a shadow-wielding Belf, but maybe don’t announce it to the world, or try to avoid Silvermoon itself as main RP hub. I mean, why stay in a city connected to the LIGHTwell if you’re a shadowy fella anyway?

This was before the Sunwell was restored though.

But you’re not Coldsháde.

I did say it’s outdated!

I might be wrong here because i cant remember the quest chain, but i think the main problem with umbrics lot is that they were working to fully infuse themselves with the void to make themselves more powerful, like alleria, which caused the problems with the sunwell etc

I’d assume that merely using shadow magic should be fine
