[Question] Do you capitalise the names of magics?

Was just wondering whether you do it or not. I can never make up my mind whether I should write Arcane or arcane when I roleplay. I sometimes even change it up multiple times during a single RP session because I have absolutely no clue which one of the two is correct.

I think it depends whether you talk about the Arcane, as in the name of the school/sort of magic, or if you talk about an adjective, like: “The arcane barrage” or “arcane blast”, etc.

I would personally only capitalize Arcane if I talked about the school/sort of magic itself. Just like with Frost or Fire magic.

“He talked about the Arcane for hours.”
“He showed how powerful his arcane shield was.”

I think this is adjective vs noun :slightly_smiling_face:

Yes when its the focus of the statement, no when its a desciptor.

If I specifically mean the magic I capitalize. Since like, one may mean light in another meaning (be it sunlight or that of a torch, or meaning a sign of hope and alike) rather than the magic, Light which is Holy and all.

Although I’m not an expert in this manner.

Edit: also what Kharaas said.

What about races! “The tauren” vs “The Tauren”

“I capitalise them seemingly at random with no consistency at all, and gaslight everyone around me into thinking they’re having a stroke.”-Telaryn.

Whereas I just capitalise it randomly with no consistency because I don’t pay attention to it beyond what looks best for the specific sentence at the time, vaguely, maybe.

What I do, I capitalize names and spells or anything that has any importance. I don’t straight out “Casts Outbreak on X” or “Shoots Death Coil on X” since it has 0 depth.

I usually do capitalise on the names, yeah. An arcane language (not known, not understandable or comprehensible) is different to Arcane scrolls (magical scrolls imbued with Arcane magic).

Otherwise, a simple shadow caused by a torch’s light is not akin to the Shadow magic’s conflict with the Light.

This also helps clear any confusion for the reader as they might be confused otherwise (even if it does not make a difference for the character themselves).

But, this is only when talking about the magic; spells I don’t capitalize because I feel that’s obvious. :woman_shrugging:

yes in ten letters

Why would you? You don’t capitalise words like human.

On this matter: do not capitalise races in WoW, ever.

Curious, I actually do capitalize Human purposefully to differentiate it from the IRL uses, such as “we’re only human” or “human nature”. As a belf, during the RP it ‘reminds’ everyone involved that we’re these fantastical creatures rather than beautiful flawless self-inserts.

I like to capitalize races. Blood Elf, Tauren, Forsaken. Especially since Forsaken technically aren’t an inherent race but a manufactured race, if that makes sense. They’re all “undead”, which is a condition. A state of existence.

mummy blizz said it’s my turn with the capital letters

Your language doesn’t even capitalise your average noun. Be happy we don’t just take your shift keys away.

I agree with the noun/adjective distinction. That way I have to think less.

I’ll be honest, I don’t RP, but I certainly do capitalize the schools of magic, and also the class name. Eg: Frost Mage, Frost DK, Arms Warrior, Fury Warrior. Personally I think it just looks better, and it’s a little more legible.

Basically that.
