Question from a beginner

Welcome!
I have never seriously dealt with professions in my life however, in this add-on I would like to change that and play quietly and without any spin. I would like to ask you a trivial yet difficult question: which profession should I choose for a paladin? I don’t want to push m+ for the highest score, I don’t want to earn as much gold as possible sitting 24/7 on AH. I prefer a slow game mode, doing open world content, where I will slowly develop professions that I want to be interesting and engaging. I don’t have a lot of gold resources so rather gathering + something

If you are mostly doing open world content and don’t want to bother with Auction house, I would advise you to pick two gathering professions (regardless of your class). Mining and Herbalism are great choices. You pick up herbs and minerals while you play, then make a trip to the AH every now and then to sell what you gathered. You won’t spend a lot of time at AH and you will make a decent amount of gold.

You can get almost all crafted equipment and consumables by either having someone craft them for you or buying them from the AH. You don’t need the crafting professions to use their items.

Crafting professions require a lot gold spending to make them do anything useful. And if you want to make gold, you either play the AH game or spend hours in trade chat to craft items for people (and I guess that’s not what you want). Crafting gear for your own use is not really worth the hassle. You will need to spend a lot of time and gold leveling up the profession in order to be able to craft something useful, when it’s easy to just find someone to craft the item for you.

The only crafting profession that’s worth noting and provides unique bonuses is Engineering. You will get some nice utility like access to mailbox, repair in dungeons, wormholes for instant transports, etc. However, it’s expensive to level up and you won’t make a lot of gold unless you spend hours in AH/trade chat.

Not true. A player in DF was selling tons of stuff in all 4 seasons, exclusively profession equipment, so it’s very doable to earn gold on engineering. However from my own experience the AH works like this: If you want to earn gold from selling what others also are selling, you need to watch over your sales A LOT, because there will be many players undercutting you fairly often. It’s simple but the best advice I can give you.

Which professions to choose?
For a profession which is not as costly as many others, imo Alchemy is a good choice and you can level it up relatively easy if you provide your own mats from gathering.
You will also get the benefits (when you’ve invested enough Knowledge Points) that phials and flasks last considerably longer when you use them yourself., and you can craft a trinket also with benefits.

For sales purpose Alchemy is also doing well right now, especially flasks and some phials but that could change to another focus once we get further into the season. Although selling flasks never go completely out of business because of raids:-P
I’ve leveled up quite many different professions and this season I think wow-professions,
have excellent guides and a thorough explanations to many of the professions.
Good luck m8:-)

What exactly is not true? And how is what you wrote related to what I said.
I was referring to the engineering only toys and gadgets that can provide some convenience, such as access to repair anywhere, wormholes, etc. By “unique bonuses”, I didn’t mean at all earning gold. Only engineers get those bonuses.

The original poster wanted a profession without much interaction with auction house. I assume if he doesn’t like AH a lot, I assume he wouldn’t also like to fulfil NPC work orders several times per week and spending thousands of gold to get the knowledge points needed so he can craft equipment at max rank. He also wouldn’t like spending hours in trade chat looking for customers to craft equipment (profession equipment or otherwise) for.

This is why I advised him to get two gathering professions. Easy, simple, decent gold earnings, cheap to level up, no need to play AH a lot and no need to spend hours in trade chat.

I even highlighted it in my previous post as YOUR quote. Pretty clear statement that you write that Engineering is worth nothing and that’s why I wrote “Not true” and give you the example with Engineering in DF.

I am an Engineer btw. I made gold in DF and TWW. But can you explain how it’s possible without using AH or spending hours in trade chat?

Here is my quote

I didn’t write anything about not using AH or trade chat, however I seemed to have misunderstood your line “noting” which I read as “nothing”…my bad. I’m sorry.

It might be the most sensible and fun if I had two gathering professions on the druid ( Because of the flight forms) and on the paladin I will take engineering and alchemy. Maybe I won’t be as efficient due to the fact that I’ll spend time on two characters, but I’ll experience the fun of creating something without a total tryhard and a lot of gold.

You’re very welcome
