Are people from different realms not allowed to enter the main cities or why are they dead in comparison to the outside areas? And if so, does this affect only Orgrimmar and Stormwind or other areas too?
2 reasons.

They’re out doing other stuff.

Valdrakken has an Auction House, so players have very little reason to go back to Org or SW.
But the main cities appear to be much more crowded on more populated servers like Draenor, but the other areas are just as populated on low and full servers
oh sorry. yeh I get what you mean now.
I think it’s something to do with Sharding. They tend to prioritise grouping certain realms together, but only when it seems to reach a certain threshold.
Honestly, I’ve not idea how it works. But I always seem to get put together with Doomhammer when the servers are busy. But not when they’re quiet.
In the outside worlds, the concept of realms doesn’t exist. You are placed in a “shard”.
The factors that determine which shard you are placed in are your faction and whether you have warmode on. Basically people with WM on or off are on separate shards. And the system tries to have same number of both factions in each shard if possible (especially with WM on). I also think being on an RP realm affects that too, but I don’t know how.
This is why the outside world is alive, because you see players from all realms. In times where there aren’t many players online, they reduce the number of shards, so shards still look full of players.
in cities, you usually see people from your own realm. You can be on another realm’s city by being invited by a player from another realm. This is why faction cities are empty on less populated realms and full of players on populated realms.
Thanks. I wonder if the city population is a reason to pick a more populated realm, it does kind of bother me when the cities are constantly empty. And of course the prices being significantly higher (ie. the 32 slot bags typically go for 4-5 times higher prices)
It’s can be a valid reason for some players. However, the most common reasons are for players to easily find a guild, for guilds to easily recruit new players to replace those leaving and the cheaper prices in the auction house.
This is why in the past when those realms had 1-2 hours queue, and Blizzard opened free transfer out of those realms, most people stayed.
