So I’m thinking of roleplaying a Mag’har orc and had a couple of questions.
First of all, about Draenor, what exactly are the Main universe and Alternate universe? Which should I consider joining if I want to roleplay a Mag’har orc?
Regarding the Mag’har themselves, are they considered to be a clan or a race? Is there a Mag’har leader that all clans have to serve or are clans such as Forstwolves and Bleeding Hollow more or less independent?
The main universe Mag’har are the ones from The Burning Crusade. They were the Orcs who escaped the fel taint after being isolated, as they were infected by the Red Pox.
The alternate timeline was created by Garrosh and Kairozdormu. In this timeline, Grommash refused the Blood of Mannaroth, forming the Orcs into an uncorrupted “Iron Horde”. Some Orcs did drink demon blood when Gul’dan finally summoned the Legion, but most were uncorrupted. After the defeat of Archimonde, the Orcs lived peacefully with the Draenei, until the Draenei began an aggressive campaign based around forcible conversion due to the Naaru’s influence.
If you want a character who has spent a lot of time in Azeroth already, and can be established as having travelled around or taken part in some events, the main timeline is the best way to go about it.
If you want a character who is more new to Azeroth, then the alternate timeline is probably better. You should also note that your alternate universe Orc would likely have a heavy animosity to Draenei and Light users as a result of their conflict, so if you enjoy that kind of roleplay or character, an alternate timeline Orc is a good choice.
The Iron Horde united into a single faction under the leadership of Grommash, drawing on the Frostwolves and Laughing Skull, before taking in survivors from the Iron Horde. I don’t believe they were independent, though the clans retained most of their cultural distinction.
Grommash was their leader, but he was left behind in the alternate timeline to fight off the Draenei. Geya’rah was his second in command, and serves as their de-facto leader, representing them on the Horde council post-BFA.
Your character would be from what is now Outland, but has been part of the Horde since The Burning Crusade. They might have been able to travel to Northrend, Pandaria, the Broken Isles, and Zandalar, since then.
Your character would be from the alternate timeline and have spent their life until the events of Battle for Azeroth there. They also cannot go back to the alternate Draenor.
There is also a third option: an AU Mag’har orc who left Draenor during WoD. They would still be relatively new to Azeroth but not have much reasons to dislike draenei/the light because that all happened after they left.
Yup. The portal between AU Draenor and our Azeroth was shut off at the end of WoD.
There are some minor differences between them (as is tradition whenever fantasy/sci-fi does alternate universe storyline), but overall they were the same thing until about 35-40 years ago.
Mag´har from both MU (Outland) and AU (Draenor) are one clan, but there don´t seem to be any big differences left among Mag´har orcs from various clans in MU (similar how orcs of Durotar at this point are one nation) while AU Mag´har seem to have retained at least some of their clan culture, even if they are just one big clan at this point.
Well, of course, but is this because the Mag’har themselves lost much of that clan culture after so many years of living in Nagrand together, or because the clans as a whole had very little lore other than their names? Lack of lore is something all of the clans suffered from until WoD, when Blizzard went ham ((unfortunately in some cases)) and expanded on the Orcish clans, much of which is now canon for them in the MU as well.
We know at least the Bleeding Hollow continue to have their own chieftain within the Mag’har as well, but they are also the sole clan amongst them with any real distinction.
Definitely, but it´s one of those things which provides us with more options for RP by giving us another clan, so there are really no downsides to RPing it as such.
