I have for a while now been planning on making a wretched for villainous rp. I only have a few questions now.
Since we know that elves can still become wretched from the events of the quel’lithien lodge. And that this degradation is brought by consuming too much magical energy. Could it then be possible to forcibly turn someone into a wretched elf?
The wretched also seem to have some or even most of their skills, magical and physical, from before their transformation. But how much of the person is left? While the wretched have clearly descended to some degree of insanity, have they also forgotten who they were? Or is that original person still there, twisted and marred by their addiction?
https://wow.gamepedia.com/Magistrix_Elosai a tonic (of her own creation) forcibly changed this one into a Wretched. There’s no reason that forcibly arcane-ifying someone couldn’t do the same.
Probably differs depending on how long they’ve been Wretched for.
Yes it’s possible to be forcefully changed to one…
Well, wretched seek to suck the magic out of anyone, their hunger is SO HIGH, GIMME MANA CRYSTAL GIMMEEEEEEE, something like that, I don’t know they forgot their former self, but maybe more twisted and stuff…
More than anything, all they think about is hunger for magic, more mana crystal, more power…
I always found it weird how the theme of scarcity and hunger defined blood elf addiction, yet there’s apparently enough spare mana for thousands of addicts to gorge themselves into mutants.
It would be trickier now, but still possible. Before the Sunwell was fully active again, oh heck yes. Since then, harder, as they don’t physically -need- it. Think of it (tragically, and apologies to anyone who lost someone to this condition) as like Alcoholism. At its base level. No one -needs- Alcohol to function. It is just not a basic biological necessity for a human being, in the way that fluid, food and air are.
So now that the Sunwell is working again, no one -needs- to drain mana. But they still know how to. They still remember that hit, that buzz. It’s like a long term alcoholic who finally kicked the bottle (As in Sunwell getting fixed), and you plant a Whiskey in front of them, having one yourself. They don’t -need- it, they weaned themselves off that addiction, but there is a temptation there. Now they either reject it, or they go “Well, one won’t hurt” And that’s when you’ve cracked the dam. Because if One won’t hurt, then Two won’t hurt either, and it’d be rude to turn down a Third. Before you know it, they’re an alcoholic again, to the extent that to -stop- is actually physically harmful, even fatal to them.
That’s Elves and Mana. Once you start overindulging, it is very hard for them to stop, and damaging.
So -Could- you turn someone Wretched? If they were weak willed, Impressionable, or had an addictive personality, or just were curious to see “I lasted this long, lets see if I still like it?” Then you absolutely could. Blood and High Elves can 100% still become Wretched.
I think Brigante made a very clear description of it up there I have one thought about being able to force it upon someone as in, like, shoving a lot of magic onto someone until they become Wretched. The need still has to be there, the addiction, if you mean the Wretched we see running around hunting mana crystals.
Since magic is addictive I assume one could argue they would become addicted when exposed to that much magic… On the other hand I don’t know if there has to be a bit of free will in it for it to work that way. You can forcibly corrupt someone with for example fel magic, but making someone a Wretched elf in the sense of a magic addict going overboard? If you manage to get the person addicted to magic I’d say yes, but probably not a strong minded individual if the person is not already heavily reliant on magic and have a “I want more” mindset.
Elosai which was linked to higher up was experimenting with a cure, don’t know if her mind was lost or if it was just her physical body that turned into a Wretched? The npc’s we see don’t seem to have their minds left, the best example being Runas who expressed loosing sight and hearing before he turned. Sad quest that one
They’re two opposite sides of it. Wretched have Overbinged on Mana, Withered have been starved of mana, They literally are the 1 to 10 on a scale of “How much Mana have you had today?”
Hahaha but yes that’s right, didn’t think of that. Seems the end result is rather the same though, but that could of course make my argument with Runas invalid since he is no Wretched and we have no proof as I know of that that’s what happens with Wretched elves. I’m sill in doubt they have a functional mind, I’d say it’s more the primitive brain with reactions for needs and survival instincts with the occasional emotions giving a hint of the elf they used to be. This is all just my thoughts though how I have viewd them through the game.
As we saw with Galell in blood of the Highborne, past trauma can very much play into becoming wretched (hand-in-hand with a loss of control over magical feeding/feeding into the dependancy due to psychological issues) and sticks with them even when they go insane.
Blood of the Highborne went into a fair amount of depth on how an elf goes wretched.
