What about giving players the ability to pick another race’s racial (combat) abilities upon reaching exalted with their faction?
You could easily justify the lore explanation for this: having spent a lot of time with those people, getting to know them, you’ve adapted and mastered their strengths.
I’m sure many of you have once wanted to play a certain race because of the looks and feels, but couldn’t commit to it because the racial is just so weak.
This could be an easy fix to this issue.
It could only be done within races of your faction, since you’d need exalted status.
So, more like a goblin doing that.
It’s not that far of a stretch: if your goblin can already be a warrior and use shock wave, why wouldn’t he be able to stomp?
You don’t seem to fully understand how much better the ability to Shadowmeld a polymorph or a chaos bolt in arena is, compared to…running 40% faster.
For highly competitive players, this matters A LOT.
This isn’t Counterstrike, where everything is down to skill at the perfectly equal level because everyone is exactly the same.
In RPGs you have to make choices - ROLE playing - and then live by them, they have consequences in being stronger in some areas and weaker in others. Choosing class, specs, races and factions should have impactful and preferably permanent effects because a very core element of the genre is creating a unique character that has to make hard choices.
Lots of people don’t like that it seems; lots of people don’t like role playing it seems.
The top hardcore players - now I don’t mean you OP - have an inherent conflict with RPGs because they are so intensely competitive and maximum efficiency is their thing. They are entitled to like playing games that way, however they really ought to recognise they are detrimental to the genre.

11% night elf is not because all those people are into nature & elven lore my friend.
If anything, giving people the ability to pick a race without being crippled by a weak racial ability would make the world more diverse since people could entirely commit to a race purely because of its lore or its look.
I mean I’m virtually on the brink of paying a race change just because the proof is in the pudding, any other rogue bar a night elf is a like easily 100% handicap cause of the lack of a free re-opener with subterfuge garrote
Racials are going to be very impactful come SL.
People won’t believe it but given now that most races have to use gladiator medalions again that means any racial with a flat dps increase or freedom mechanic is ahead of any other race.
The other odd exception being tauren/nelf druid cause of meld rake/stomp cyclone but still implies your better off with those druids over any other race/class combo of druid
It’s not my fault the inexplicable attraction of this game to people who seemingly don’t like role-playing games.
This game describes itself as an MMO RPG. Until Blizzard alter this I will continue to criticise their decisions and perhaps more so players who conflict with it.
Just what is the point making characters in a game where there are no effective decisions? How can a character have any value if he can switch into anything?

And alltough i like the idea. In the end it wouldnt work.
People would always choose the exact same racials either for PVP or PVE. In that case it does not matter much.
And if a racial is nerfed or anotherone is boosted people would DEMAND that they could pick new racials. Wich would not make much sense
Overall the Racials are trivial at best. Only for those who seek to do the higest content possible does a racial truely matter. And even then… Eh meh.
Its too much work. I think racials should be nerfed into the ground to provide nice racial abilities but not true advantages.
I quite like racials the way they are really. I don’t think that just because some feel the need to base their decision on what to play on a racial they should change the entire system because of it.
The entire “it’s a rpg and choices should matter” argument is cliché af right now but it still holds value to me.
The only thing that would change is that now, people would be able to pick the racial that’s actually competitive while not being forced into a race they don’t particularly like.
You’ll notice, I specifically mentioned combat abilities in my original post.
The people who play hardcore are gone from the forums. Good suggestion, but with all players who don’t understand the importance of min maxing and how it affects even the pug world, becoming majority on the forums, you’re not doing yourself a favor trying to convince a bunch who don’t care
The Thing is, Racials are entirely trivial when it comes to playing wow. Unless you are going for M+25 in the first week of the patch or you want to hit world first within a week or two.
And even then… if you cant do it because you dont have the ‘’ perfect’’ racial Then you should think if this game is truely for you.
That being said, it does not mean they dont matter, just not as much.
Change racials to be completely trivial, To be fantasy, cosmetic only to provide only utility based buff like darkflight or canibalize.
