Random freeze with automatic alt+tab and back in the game again

Hello,

I recently upgraded my GPU and CPU:

  • nvidia 1080 ti → amd rx 7900 xt
  • amd ryzen 2700x → amd ryzen 7 5800x3d

I play in 4k (windowed screen) on Dell U2718Q monitor. Since the upgrade, I randomly get an issue which has always the same pattern:

  1. (always) the whole computer freezes for a few seconds (~5s)
  2. (always) WoW automatically does alt+tab (like WoW is now minimized and I can see my desktop of my main monitor where WoW was 5s ago)
  3. (sometimes) an app is killed: discord, firefox, some addon manager, spotify, …
  4. (always) the game is back to normal

I tried to play with the windows task manager to see if something was taking 100% resources but nothing. I tried to check the “amd adrenaline” software with their monitoring feature and I saw that the GPU was around 99% with WoW ultra settings (10 in game in 4K resolution). I already tried to set it to 7 or 8, the GPU has less usage but I still have the same issue.

I already tried playing with the main apps shut down (discord, firefox, overwolf, raider.io, warcraftlogs, the battle net launcher, wago app, curse client app) and I still have the problem.

Would you have some recommendations on tools to use or what to look for to find the issue and fix it? dxdiag.exe shows no problems. Any logs somewhere that might be helpful?

Thanks a lot!

I enabled the bug tool from Adrenaline software and I could see that I get the timed out issue with Windows.
I can’t get rid of the problem and I tried everything here: https://www.makeuseof.com/amd-driver-timeout-tdr-windows/

Point 1: no change
Point 2: already up-to-date so no change
Point 3: no change
Point 4: didn’t try yet because I am still using the driver from point 3
Point 5: I have more crashes without the Multi-Plane Overlay enabled weirdly so right now I restored it
Point 6: already up-todate so no change
Point 7: done on Chrome, Edge, Firefox
Point 8: got that for at least a month, I am only trying to fix it now
Point 9: done that, no change
Point 10: done that, no change
Point 11: no OC (not by me at least), no overheating either. I did a GPU stress test and it reached 60 degrees
Point 12: already up-to-date
Point 13: I got the issues without that initially, I don’t have adrenalin software anymore

Not sure what else I could try.

I have no crash since I disabled MPO and used directx 11 instead of 12.
