Ranged Weapons?

I have a level 38 Assassination Rogue who is having problems staying alive at the moment. Can he use ranged weapons? If so should he buy them, or what?

The answer is no. Melee class.

You used to be able to use ranged in Vanilla but I don’t know how long the feature has been gone. It was only really for getting the odd cheeky shot off on some git who has rooted you.

I highly suggest leveling as outlaw if surviving is your problem, most of your damage will be raw then and not based on damage over time.

With Rogues, you want to always control the battlefield. This means you pick and choose what to pull, how many, and if things go wrong you Vanish and start over.

Assassination, while leveling, can be pretty nigh unkillable in PvE, and you can get there without sacrificing speed. Leeching Poison is really strong in World Content, especially when combined with the whole toolkit.

From what I’ve seen, Players who have trouble with Rogues tend to not use their Defensives and Utilities enough. You have Stuns and Blind, use those. Pop those Defensives, Sprint away. Kick to interrupt those Spells. Rogues have a lot of tools to use, it’s just up to you to take advantage of them.

Learning to Pool Energy instead of spamming abilities as soon as they are up is also essential. Practice on a dummy, to find the rhythm, and try to always have at least 50 Energy available to start with. Once you get more comfortable and learn how to deal with Energy as a Resource, you will instinctively know when you can afford to deplete your whole Energy Bar without that handicapping you. The Energy + Combo Point system is more about timing things right, so think of it a bit like a dance, where the important thing is to keep in time, feel the rhythm.

Wait, so rolling my face across the keyboard and hoping for the best isn’t the correct way to play?

Damn. That technique was Est. 2004.

Esti, if you mention it… It is one of couple od features I miss - a freedom of choice. Even if I wasn’t a hunter I could use bows, crossbows and I could throwing daggers, hatches, axes etc. (echo of this feature still remains as rogues can still add transmog of ranged weapons to their collection)(thank god for pistol shots as outlaw). Thats one of proves, simplify gameplay isn’t always mean more fun.
I think main mistake generally in WoW is to take something back rather than give another option next to the first one.

Not to mention the XP boost you could get from the heirloom bow in your ranged slot! Though I’m sure they balanced this somehow.

Yes, glad we have pistol shot. The slow is at least quite effective in PVP when your sprint is on CD and you need to close the gap quickly.
