Vashj’ir hands down.
Only on account of it being the most unique zone Blizzard has ever made. It changed how you traditionally traversed and explored a zone, and put more focus on vertical zone building rather than flat, two dimension plains and the occasional cliff to fall and die off.
I like many zones, almsot every single I could say. For me it’s easier to say which I don’t like, cauz these are just a few.
Southpoint Gate in the Hillsbrad Foothills. You’re probably wondering “Ew, why?”. This is where we first meet Dumass, the excitable Forsaken adventurer.
I just love this guy. He’s like a puppy that’s missing half a brain. You meet him again trapped in a mine, where the foreman outside “thanks” you for freeing him, and when Dumass eventually screws up it’ll be on the player.
Southpoint Gate is also where you meet Kingslayer Orkus, an enthusiastic, but rather condescending Orc. Later on the player rescues him from drowning in water he could stand in. Then the two embark on a mission to steal some plans from the Alliance. Sadly Orkus passes away from his wounds on the flight back, but not before telling the player that he was his best friend. It was extremely emotional, and I’m having trouble finishing off this paragraph as the salt from the tears sting my eyes.
When you land, Cromush takes Orkus’ body and labels both you and Orkus “Heroes of the Horde”.
So while not the most scenic of locations, Hillsbrad Foothills has some of the most memorable characters and stories.
This is why I detest Nazjatar and Mechagon. They lack the character that these classic zones have. There’s no real story, and you don’t feel part of a bigger picture. They are glorified world quest zones, and that’s it.
Zuldazar is pretty neat, too. I love the Zandalari lore, I love the Vulpera. Then there’s the Tortollans, with their long, drawn out stories. I love them too.
The entire continent is just amazing. You have a bit of everything, from a lush jungle environment, to a swamp, to an unforgiving desert. On top of that, the whole of Zuldazar is easy to navigate. I never really found myself saying “Now how on earth do I get down/up/through there?”.
I could go on, but I should probably stop before this post gets any longer.
For me it has to be Nagrand - spent such a long time there over the years and loved the mini floating areas that had water pouring off, would fly to them, and chill out
/aww memories
I feel like the draenor zones were just such a waste, it pisses me off to see what happened with wod.
Surumar and shadowmoon are up there in my most liked aesthetically and surumar questing is also amazing.
I really hope that blizzard considers upgrading some zones, from past expansions, by upgrading i don;t just mean aesthetically but also give a reason to come back, to those zones, afterall it’s not like they disappeared, new things could happen in those zones.
Wod was also supposed to have another zone, that was scrapped, faralon i think it was called, anyway, pretty much all wod zones look amazing, it’s really a disgrace that the expansion was so objectively bad.
Oh, mac’aree also, is aesthetically good looking, but it was such a waste that we did not get to see the city, it would have made for possibly the best looking city along with surumar, making legion the expansion with the 2 best cities in wow ever.
Favorite zones - oh my lord, where do I start?
-
Dragonblight - the lore for this zone, the Scarlets of this zone, the “everything” of this zone was a blast, both as Horde and Alliance. Call me odd though, but despite the leveling changes now, I still can only go to this zone at level 72 - 76.
-
Netherstorm - yes, despite everything, I love Netherstorm. I especially loved the Manaforge areas of the zone. I mainly run Blood Elf casters through this zone and I do feel, oddly at home.
-
Ashenvale (Pre-Cata) - loved it. Big, night elfy, lots of quests and just a lot of fun.
-
Eversong Woods (After FP’s were added) - I loved the blood elf starting zone. Before Cata, the only thing that let it down was the constant running from one end of the zone to the other and it was so…ugh. The additional flightmasters helped this zone.
-
Ghostlands - Loved it’s Blood Elf/Forsaken vs Scourge theme. Nice build up to WotLK
I could go on and on and list Western and Eastern Plaguelands as well as Hillsbrad Foothills.
I actually think all the WoD zones were amazing, there just wasn’t an end game reason to be in them.
- Gorgrond
- Nagrand (new)
- Shadowmoon valley (new)
- Grizzly hills
- Vol’dun
1.Uldum
2.Shadowmoon WoD
3.Zuldazar
4.Eversong Woods
Goldshire Inn.
Aesthetically speaking…
Jade Forest (sometimes I don’t complete the main quest so’s not to ruin it)
Valley of the Four Winds
Darkshire (creepy ain’t a crime)
Stormsong Valley
Zuldazar
Vashj’ir
Grizzly Hills
Loch Modan
Winterspring
…yeah, I like the zones that feel more terrestrial. Never got on with the aesthetic in TBC, WoD or Legion. Exception for Vashj’ir because it was legitimately a really interesting thing when new. I would always choose that above Mt Hyjal - but now we can choose Pandaria instead, and most of that is leaps and bounds ahead of everything else.
- Mac’aree.
- Mulgore
- Feralas
- Vol’dun
- Badlands (vanilla, not this Cata crap)
- Shadowmoon Valley (WoD)
- Spires of Arak
- Dragonblight
- Scholazar Basin
- Vash’ir
I love many other zones, but these are my top 10 favorites.
As I’ve started as horde 13 years ago I have a sort of love attachment to the old barrens. Those days questing was really slow and I spent lot of good time there. Then I know it’s not a zone but I like thunderbluff.
For the same attachment i spent lot of time there Outland TBC Nagrand, with floating islands and sky waterfalls. Best! Screenshots! Ever!
I really like Netherstorm too. When leveling my void elf, I cleared the full zone except a few group quests I could not find people for. I got most of the group quests done, but the ones deep into the storyline was harder to find people for. Went back and did them at 120 though.
I have some good memories of that place.
Phrasing. It’s important.
Also, a male blood elf is among those females.
