Really Confused By The Maw

Hey, returning player here. I’m notoriously terrible at WoW, hence my confusion with The Maw. What is the purpose of it? I went there, farmed some rare mobs and dailies, then it told me to kill an Executioner at Level 5. However, the passive damage was too much, so I had to leave. I felt like I didn’t get anything useful there, so I’m probably missing something.

What is the end goal of the Maw? I’m just utterly confused by it.

We all are. :stuck_out_tongue:

TL;DR: The purpose of the Maw is to grind Stygia from the mobs. The purpose of Stygia is to add sockets to your gear.

It also serves as an access point for Torghast.

It also gives access to the Runecarver, who will make your Legendaries.

It also serves as a source of Souls to save for a weekly Renown quest.

I’m not sure what you mean “kill an Executioner at Level 5.”

P.S. Is this the guy you were sent to kill?

You will be sent there, but he’s not an executioner?

Ah, that makes more sense. I assumed Stygia was just for rewards from the vendor, not making sockets.

Hmm, well, I hit level 5, and I got a notification to kill something, but I’ve slept since then, so I’ve forgot. It was a notification at the top of the screen, then it was marked on my map.

It wasn’t for the Reawakening quest as I’ve done that. For some reason I assumed you could get gear from The Maw? I think I read 180+ gear has a chance of dropping from a specific rare, but I may have misunderstood.

Doesn’t seem to be. Some rares drop toys and stuff:

but even if something drops some piece of gear occasionally, gear is not what you go there for.
