I’m on Draenor and got thrown out of the game, then it put me in a queue, then it loaded a list but none of the realms were ones I had characters on.

Same here but my realm was on the list but it don’t load up for me to character screen.
Edit. Just as I post it lets me back in…
same here. i have caracters on alonsus, draenor silvermoon kultiras . all gone for now 
Sorry it was me, I accidentally tripped over the cables then knocked the hamster wheel off and they’re now scattered in the server room.

Same thing happened to me even though my server is not even full. I just got DC again.

Argent Dawn here. Same happened to me just right now.
Close game and restart it seems to have fixed it for me.
I chose one of the other realms in that list, then it showed my characters, and I’m back on my Warrior.

Same thing happened with me on Argent Dawn, I closed the game and restarted. It enabled me to find my server on the server list but it fails to connect every time. I suspect something to do with the login server hamsters given how widespread it is.

Got me as far as the list, I’m on Azuremyst and it wasn’t showing that I had any toons

Same happened to me on Bronzebeard. Now I can get to the character selection but selecting the character I was using when I got DC’d gives the error “A character with that name already exists”…
Same for me, Argent Dawn here. I was doing the pre-patch quest in the Twilight Highlands, got thrown out. My realm is in the list, but I don’t get any further; I’m on a black screen with “Retrieving character list”.
Update: It’s back now!
thank god i logged out and in to save what changes i’ve made to the ui just before that.
remember kids: you make any change in the ui, make sure to relog to save those changes

In addition to that make backups of the addon settings. For me that includes the WTF and Interface folders and also any possible profile exports of any important addons or UI features like the default UI customization export string. Just in case something goes wonky on the settings saved on the server.
Really, just make backups of every important file, photo etc. you have and make sure the backups work. Far too often people “I don’t have backups”, “they were on google but I don’t know passwords” etc. when computer, hard disks or such fails.
