Reasons for picking Venthyr?

Genuine question. It’s the only covenant I don’t really understand why a player character would ally with and I’m worried I’ve missed something important.

All of the other covenants have obvious reasons for choice, with quite clearly defined themes. It’s easy to see why someone might ally with the Kyrian (virtuous, lawful good, self-sacrifice), the Necrolords (it’s sort of the go-to for the strong/cunning/warlike) or the Night Fae (clear nature and Druidic themes). But you’d pick Venthyr because… you like torturing (redeeming?) sinful souls? Or have some big repentance theme going on?

I can clearly headcannon reasons for my individual characters picking specific covenants but the only one who might ally with the Venthyr would be my Blood Elf Warlock… and even then it’s only really because they have the whole edgy, high-society, slightly-sadistic thing going on.

Curious to hear some other (probably much better informed) opinions!

I’d actually say they’re the obvious choice for the mission-oriented hero. If you want to stop the Master pouring anima into the Maw, you set up shop in Revendreth, where the Venthir are, and where the Master is gathering his power, not in angel island two worlds over. You don’t have to choose who you like most, your job is to save two worlds.

That’s very true! It’s something I’d thought about but forgot to mention in my post. I suppose I was looking at it from a more thematic perspective overall. You’re completely right though.

You will help Renathal with the problems Denathrius created and restore order to Revendreth (campaign story).

Your mid paragraph sounds more like a question why someone might want to become a venthyr (the redeemer). I’d say it’s very important job to give prideful souls a second chance, if they’re worthy of it. By torturing the soul you’re cleansing it and teaching it the pain it caused to others. I don’t think it’s just that “you like torturing”. It’s a job that has to be done, and by doing so you are offering the souls a chance at better afterlife. Venthyr are supposed to be helping the souls, except under Denathrius’ rule a lot of them have been abused just to fill his anima coffers and then sent to maw. That changes now obviously

Imo, “class-focus” deals with the covenants best, i.e. while I placed my balance druid with Ardenweald, the rogue I now level will most definitely choose the Venthyr^^.
Her, my warlock (still aching in Maldraxxus at level 53) and my DH will choose the Venthyr because, I feel these classes fit the theme and “tone” of Revendreth.

My paladin, mage and priest, of course are destined (eventually… sometime near the release of the next expansion) quite naturally for Bastion.
Warrior and DK head for Maldraxxus and Ardenweald embraces shammies, monks, hunters and druids.

Well, that’s how it works for me. Just a thought anyway :innocent:

Revendreth is the last chance before the Maw
And no matter how nature loving or lawful or warlike you were… an average Azerothian “hero” would ends up in Hell, no question asked, chanined to the wall in the deepest obliete in Thorgast if you was a really bad boy, but at least the last chance before that, in Revendreth!
If you are in a position to actully choose a Covenant, that means you went through pretty much every horrible thing Azeroth had to offer since the First War… you are not just Joe from the inn from the local pub, or #565665 footsolder from the king’s army/Grount from the Horde… you are somebody with a list of sins as long as your arm
Probably longer
Why those are important? Because piciking Venthry means, you can make “friends”, allies, connections… gather a few favors, and befriend with the future ruler of the Realm, the Prince! More so, some interdimensional relationship building with the Ember Court…
So its your get-ot-of-jail card, when your time comes and you will be judged by your life, in the case you ends up in there, they already know who you are, and maybe could avoid that nasty rehabilitation part…
Well either that, or you actually could be “sired” in to the Venthyr before you bite the dust

But let put aside this nasty, greedy oppinion
Maldraxxus is for some reason is very undead themed, a waste land filled with zombies, skeletons, rotting beasts and nasty plagues and spider-like god know whats… and you are kinda forced to buddy with orc-minden warriors and… well… orcs (no Halls of Valor for you warrior boy) After what Azeroth went through thanks to the Horde and the Scourge? There is no sane person from Azeroth who would want to be the part of that
Bastion is the ultimate neutral soul carriers… but for that you have to get rid of those nasty memories, your life… everything that made you a You… for some this is a boon. But for the most? Scary brainwashing cult. And supporting that is hard. Very hard
Ardenweald is a very dark and grim place, if you think about it; yes, place of rebirth but untill the situation resolved and the Arbiter fixed or somehow the one way ticket to the Maw is stoped? You have to help the Forest. And choose who lives who never wake up, dies forever, so the Groves survive… not personally (tho if you tend the Queen’s conservatory, you kinda have to chose a soul) but helplessly watch how those dark decisions made and turn your face away…
Revendreth at least “functional”, you help them to restore order and the souls to have another chance, something you probably would never recive
And the vampire theme is awesome, true nobles, civilized and have style… something that a Blood elf/Highborne/Nightborne would apriciate

So many Venthyr fanboys in the comment section.
You pick Venthyr if you like Gothic edgy contrarian vampires.

Because it’s something different, something new and they look cool, also condemn for a warrior

I see you have no idea what you are talking about.
The Venthyr offer some of the funniest characters in this expansion, combined with court intrigue, feasts and a nice aesthetic (if you like the dark look).
Saying everyone who chooses Venthyr is a goth contrarian, is like saying that everyone who chooses Nightfae is a Hippie who loves faeries.

Transmog?

Oh, and Kael’thas story.

Grand Lector Enaara:
It feels good to be at war again, name. But I must admit… healing the wounded is growing tiresome. There are far better uses of my talents.

Many of the techniques we Lightforged employed against the Legion would serve us well fighting the Horde.

Kindly inform the High Commander that I am happy to ensure any prisoners we capture are properly… “purified”.

I mean, why not?

Overall, I would say that IMO the best description for draenei as a race would be “curiosity killed the cat”. There could be many secrets, and potentially practicaly usable knowledge. Besides, while the approach of the covenant might seem shocking for young people, not sure creatures who lived for over 10k years would be impressed with.

Or, as a player, my approach in Neverwinter Nights 2 (unless my memory betrays me) was like this:

  • take a quest from a travelling trader to save him from the bandits.
  • kill the bandits, get the reward from the trader.
  • kill the trader, get the items and money from him.
  • report in the town that the trader was killed by the bandits and get the 3rd reward for killing the bandits.

So, you get the idea, right?

That’s the whole point. If you play as a snub race like Night Elves, Undeads or Nightborne Venthyr makes perfect sense lore-wise because they share your same values as where you come from.

Venthyr are sort of last chance ticket from the eternal damnation - I think they really well portray the potential of every soul with good cause gone bad can be turned around. Making soul see their own wreckage in life to put them on right trail again.

Its a cool concept to see how the righteous souls can go down the wrong path easily and having the chance to redeem themselves in afterlife is what Ravendreth is all about. Their methods are not very - approachable, but it does it job, it seems.

Also objectively best covenant story :stuck_out_tongue:

Great example. I went Venthyr on both of my LFD. Paladins are traditionally as much about bringing retribution to the wicked as they are about granting mercy to those truly willing to repent… and on that note, priests have a spell literally called “Penance.” I think it’s a perfectly logical choice for any paladin and priest who has a more… pro-active worldview in regards to how the ideals of the Light should be put in motion. Honestly, I’d even say that Revendreth trumps Bastion in that regard. Sure, the Kyrians like to throw pretty, promising words like “duty” and “service” around, but when it comes to their actual job (ferrying souls vs. punishing and redeeming the wicked), the Venthyr’s feels much more representative of what a militant and/or strict Light-worshipper might be like in life.

The color scheme of the Renown set also happens to fit perfectly with LFDs (gold accents with decorative purple gems means your tail doesn’t clash with your tmog for once…) so there’s that too :innocent:
