Red Flags in RP?

It´s not something you can notice in random RP since it´s mostly about OOC behavior you can´t see without interacting with the player on OOC basis, but it´s somewhat of a red flag if someone RPs only one character (or few, but always the same race and with similar character traits) and their OOC views seem to line up perfectly with their character´s IC views.

There´s a decent chance in these scenarios that the character is actually just a mouthpiece for the player and the player will take it really badly if the character is opposed (even in simple conversation) or something bad happens to them.

I think it’s a cultural response to the RP phenomenon of various villains crossing lines unbidden and being a general pain in the lower spine and people who are okay with such random interactions signalling that it won’t become a four hour ordeal, two blog posts and a forum thread if somebody picks their pocket.

In an age where RPers skulk around one another, terrified to strike up a conversation or emote anything lest it strike up :dizzy:DRAMA:dizzy:, consenting to random nonsense preemptively to guarantee a chill environment might be a good idea.

My experience of these is that they’re usually a tank spec too. Makes you wonder.

My biggest and immediate red flag, which is very understandable. Not accepting the consequences of your characters actions. For too many years I have seen people worm their way OOC out of accepting consequences over something their character did – I just black list these RPers for a good long while. Personally, I am just tried of seen it, cause if they get away with it once, they know they can do it again and again.

The thing that immediately comes to mind for me is the fact that TRP already has a dedicated feature that allows for such consent regarding character injury/death to be not only given, but to varying degrees.
Perhaps the people advertising such consent so pointedly are unaware of this, but it’s just oddly specific in some scenarios. I guess one could argue that character injury/death might not cover the idea of being mugged or abducted, but that might be wandering into the realm of becoming pedantic.

Actually I think Argent Dawn would heal if Master’s Hat made a comeback

Oh, I actually very much agree. Despite its entry somewhat as a joke, I’ve met many folks of upstanding nature who wear it well. Time will heal all wounds, I suppose.

People who allegorize modern political themes, terms, slang and fads into their RP, as that most likely is a reflection of their OOC convictions, and they often don’t line up with the game’s lore…

… people who take the game’s lore too literally, strictly or too much like a holy grail, allowing no interpretation or -some- headcanon.

People who don’t take my time seriously, aren’t punctual, or are unreliable when it comes to showing up.

People who make peeve threads. :scream:

Yes, there’s like five of them now.

I have been sort of out of the loop on such, I actually have not noticed.

Darn my peeves, I’m trying to be more positive. :sob: I’ll just have to tell myself this is educational.

No robust OOC communication and all play makes RP something something.

People rushing into looking for a specific kind of RP from strangers (like being in a relationship) tends to be a little spooky.

I’ll just link back to an older post I made in the actual pet peeve thread:

Can be justified if they had encounters with people who take your characters behavior very personal.

Which would be another red flag.

I’m not sure I’ll do the best job in explaining this but -

I’ve had a few occassions during RP where people seem to be ignoring the scene/characterisation or interaction, to hopefully use IC interactions as a gateway to OOC friendship or familarity.

I’m finding it hard to explain, there’s just a particular gut feeling when say - my character is being particularly beliggerent or untoward, and the other person is breaking their own characterisation in reaction (no negative responses from them etc). It’s usually the sign of a little bit of underlying intent.

Always a bit of a :triangular_flag_on_post:

Ones I wanted to bring up were already mentioned, but behaving as if RP was a job / second job has always been one for me personally.

The pushing of boundaries, a fixation with your character on the first encounter, abrupt & suggestive remarks, coded/suggestive phrases within TRP profiles. If you end up feeling uncomfortable, there’s no harm in trusting your gut and cutting an interaction short. :blue_heart:

Back in Legion I joined a guild were the GM and the other officers had to kick another officer because he legit said officering the guild was his job, and he was here to make sure everything ran smoothly and it depended on him. He’d log in super early and would not log out until 5 or 6. If there was an event he’d stay logged in until it was over

It became extremely unhealthy and as time went on he got more and more aggressive IC and OOC that the Guild Leader had to make the final call and boot him from the guild. Where ever he is now, I hope he is okay and living a healthier life than he was back in Legion.

I know a few players that cannot separate the IC from the OOC person which can cause allot of drama.
