As much as I like all the colour matching, thematic abilities of bosses and mobs, it very often makes abilities unnecessarily hard to see. I’m talking specifically of “swirlies” type abilities, as they’re the main culprits here. They’re lack of hard defined border seems to be responsible for many otherwise avoidable deaths.
Most other abilities are often clearly designed, think the stacking circle mechanics, the ones that pull you into the middle. Some frontal cones are more clear than others… The defining difference seems to be how clear the border of the ability is.
Now those swirlies have a “fade out” border or whatever you want to describe it as. I’ve personally had only a few issues with this over multiple expansions, but jeez on Sarkareth, that deep purple floor as glorious as it looks, makes them swirlies pretty hard to spot…
Don’t care if this becomes an accessibility option or a standard thing, but could we get more hard border abilities instead of the fading out / progressively transparent toward the edges type swirls? Feels annoying dying or seeing a guildie die by being one pixel into the circle…
I think the biggest problem with these things is how the colour of an ability closely matches the theme of the dungeon.
Having a purple themed dungeon (seat of the triumverate) with a boss spewing purple bad things and amidst them a good purple circle that you need to soak is poor.
All they need is just clear outlines in a fixed color. Since colorblind people can’t see many/any colors usually, the outline should be white on dark background and black on bright backgrounds.
That alone would solve the problem a lot already. Adding “fills” that close based on casting progression would perfect the system then.
