Yeah i often miss it, it was also insanely fun to derp around in bg’s. Sure it took ages to kill anyone, but no one could kill you in 1v1, or sometimes even 1v2, even 1v3.
And in the end you killed them by simply outlasting and slowly chewing their hp away.
No doubt one of the funniest era’s of warlock play, mop had it’s moments of greatness.
Such shift from MoP desing come because Blizz has fired Xelnath - designer who made MoP warlock’s redesing, and because in legion Blizz had DH and comparing Demo-Metamorphosis with DH-Meta put two button havok in the bad light.
And these changes looks like a work of person who hated everything that Xelnath did, it was complete 180 turn from his ideas. And in legion rework we had no one to protect our ideals and class design/fantasy.
Hell, I for one would like that all classes can either heal or tank (or both!) - Why not let a Warlock transform into a Demon-Guard and tank?
Why not let a mage revert time (to a state before a character was hit by something) to heal?
Hell, why not give the Hunters the ability to tank via their pet (could do the same for Locks but them tranforming is just IMHO more appropriate!)?
If everybody can either tank or heal that might - somewhat - fix the tank (and healer) problem, because instant invites to dungeons are great especially since most gear these days works for healers, tanks and dds!
was one of my favorite skills , which brings me to point of blizzard must make legacy server , there is good amount of people jump on mop private server for how bad blizzard destroyed demo with being tank paper and and remove neither plate 250% and old version of demon armor , and make it ramping spec where if you get 1 stun in pve/pvp your rotation is wasted or if you want to evade boss mechanic , imo they must remove stupid shard system and make it mana base again , also im not big fan of metamorphsis purple source bar where you take ages to fill it only to transform to demon and waste it with insta cast small shadowbolt/soulfire in 4-5 hits which is bad as it makes destro much better option during mop era , so its better get rid of resource system for all classes to make balance much easier and stop time gating strong ability behind resources and make it cooldown instead like in wrath of the lich king days
Yet Demo was extremely good and popular spec. Demonic fury bar didn’t needed long time to be filled, and you didn’t needed 1000 demonic fury in order to burst someone or use meta for mobility or defence capabilities. Destro was way more simple then Demo, that is why it was easy pick for new players.
Meta was not just about you transforming into demon, it was about you taking control over your DPS/Survivability when it was needed, MoP desing didn’t tried to put all your burst potencial on some poor desinged AI of some of your uncontrolable demons that we see now. Sure you main demon was a pretty good chunk of your damage, no one will deny that, but Meta was about your actions, about you being in the middle of the confrontation and where you was fully responsible for your victory of failure.
Didn’t play during MoP, but I was around when we had meta, and I have to say I miss it a lot, it was a good defense against melees, in 1v1 I had the best time with it. And now we summon hordes of demons, I prefer the old style, but I guess I have to deal. The only change I can think of that they can make that won’t ruin their “genius” plan for warlock, is to get rid of those imps, they are annoying, I hate imps.
Meta was good spell from pure gameplay desing standpoint, because it removed good chunk of DPS responsability from our main demon. And knowing all tech/desing problems of our pets, it was the right idea. With meta, we took control of critical part of our damage, and we was in charge of our every victory or loss.
When in TBC we won or loss it was not so intimate or pure like it was with meta, when all action happens somewhere apart from us, and it is not US who kill the enemy, slayed the dragon, conquered the castle and seduced the princess… it feels wrong and distantly. If we won, it was not purely because YOU were GOOD, it was because your DEMON didn some damage.
If you experienced loss in TBC or now in BFA, you had and have several options
your opponet was really GOOD
You need to improve your skills as player/get better gear
AI/Desing/Damage of your demons was bad
With 1 and 2 you can fix these things, became better and get better gear. But with 3 there is nothing you can do about it. And when source of player frustration lies in the area when he or she cannot improve, it only makes things worse.
With Meta 3 could be a problem, but at far lesser scale. With meta, you was the hero of the action, Player of the game, MVP.
And sadly that blizzard pushed idea of puppeteer demo, and doesn’t care how it would play.
Like Todd Howard said “it just works”…but he said that about one system of the game, that was actualy good. “it just works” about demonology, means that spec is barely playable in PvE and PvP.
Dark apostheosis in combination with mass drain life… I remember being able to tank all the alliance in a 40 vs 40 bg. We also had quite a few passive damage reduction talents.
I remember saving the day on bosses by popping DA when the tank dropped. And then there was that sweet, sweet mass drain. I think I miss MoP destro a little more, though.
