So sometimes when I want to make a name change to something cool and relevant to the class usually the name is taken, not a problem but as I understand it even if that char with that name I want has been inactive for 10yearas it’s still taken, can a system be put in place to ‘cleanup’ or simply allow characters who are active to take a inactive characters name? A 5 year old char that has had almost no game time, should that still live able to take a name, or become a forgotten hero
You don’t know that. If the account is still active by a player within the last 2 expansions then they will not be released for renaming.

Edit: You could go ingame or post at the forums to see if someone has that name and would like to release it to you but otherwise nopes.
Double naming most likely does not work with WoWs coding. The forsaken character would probably have to be renamed by the system, which no one will ever do.
Chances are not 100% zero the character will be used again.
Cleaning the database up could be a solution but I doubt, for the same reason as renamign them, they will never do that, as they haven’t set up a rule in ToS for inactrive characters, and they will probably never include this.
MMOs in general have this “issue”.

Eh the problem is, it is not anymore WoW only but Battle.net Acount. So if for example someone gave up WoW but still plays CoD then the names will also be kept.
Even if the WoW account didn’t have any subscription for more than 2 xpacs?
I know it says b. net account in the support article, but does it not check on activation status of the WoW liscences?
Yeah. WoW Acount and Battle.net Acount are two different things. WoW Acount is really just the license of WoW you have while Battle.net Account includes all the Activision Blizzard games. So if someone stops playing WoW but still regulary plays Hearthstone the names on his WoW Account will be kept because he regulary uses his Battle.net Acount.
Only when someone stops logging in entirely for 2 expansions in his Battle.net Account then their names will be freed.
I don’t know. On one hand it would be nice to take some Roleplay names I would love to have.
But on the other hand, it would feel awful to come back to the game after a long vacation and have to rename all my characters just as I come back to the game.
